The present study entitled “Effect of different growing conditions on rooting and growth of stem cuttings in pomegranate (Punica granatum L.)”, was conducted at Horticultural Research Centre (HRC) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, during 2016 and 2017. The experiment was laid out using RBD with two growing conditions. The stem cuttings when grown in under shade had recorded significantly earliest sprouting and highest survival, shoot and root growth of stem cutting.

Pomegranate is commercially propagated by cuttings. Use of optimum concentration of IBA, type of cutting and optimum rooting media would help in rapid multiplication of pomegranate cuttings. The success percent of pomegranate cuttings depends on many factors such as conditions of the mother plant, rainfall, time of operation, temperature fluctuation, aftercare etc.

Pomegranate can be propagated by seed, air layering, grafting, shoot cuttings and tissue culture. Seed propagation is used to raise the rootstocks that can be utilized for germplasm conservation and rootstocks breeding purpose. Vegetative propagation methods are used to multiply selected genotypes that bring similar character in form of clones having similar characters to mother plant. Vegetative propagation techniques (hard wood cutting, layering) are practices to raise the saplings for commercial production in pomegranate, because it perpetuates all characteristics of each cultivar.

The effect of time and temperature on the respiration rate (RR) of fresh-cut produce is critical towards the development of a suitable modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system. This requires an adequate mathematical model for prediction of RR as a function of both time and temperature. This study investigated the effect of temperature (5, 10 and 15 °C) and storage time of 1 to 5 days on the RR (RO2 and RCO2) of two pomegranate cultivars (cv. „Bhagwa‟ and„Ganesh‟) fresh arils. RO2 and RCO2 were within the range of 2.54 to 8.36 ml/kg.h and 2.76 to 10.04 ml/kg.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is one of the hardy crop and may have potential to be grown under salt affected areas although salinity could be a limiting factor for growth and yield in its cultivation. Thus, screening of salt tolerant genotype of pomegranate is one of the most important aspects for the best utilization and improving the productivity of salt affected soils.
