Poor biodegradability
-
The catalytic activity of poly(N-vinylimidazole), a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic functional polymer, was investigated for the synthesis of oximes as an efficient, halogen-free, and reusable heterogeneous catalyst. The corresponding oximes were afforded in high to excellent yields at room temperature and in short times using the planetary ball mill technique.

Alkaline pulping liquors are the problematic for environment due to their toxicity and poor biodegradability. During last decade, anaerobic treatment technology has been successfully applied to various types of pulp and paper industry effluents. In the present study, the treatment of highly toxic pulping liquors in lab-scale has been done using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from sediment samples of pulp and paper mills in Vietnam. This treatment could reduce 70 - 75% of COD after three weeks. The COD removal could achieve 82 - 88% by subsequent aerobic treatment in 48 hours.

Highly biodegradable and bioactive Fe-Pd-bredigite biocomposites prepared by selective laser melting
Iron (Fe) has been highly anticipated as a bone implant material owing to the biodegradability and excellent mechanical properties, but limited by the slow degradation and poor bioactivity. In this study, novel Fe-palladium (Pd)-bredigite biocomposites were developed by selective laser melting aiming to improve both the degradation behavior and bioactivity of Fe. The results showed that most Pd formed Pd-rich intermetallic phases (IMPs) with a nearly continuous network while the bredigite phase was distributed at the grain boundaries.
