Post-harvest losses in Banana
-
Mango fruit plays an important economic role in Côte d’Ivoire as the third major exported fruit after banana and pineapple. The main issue of the mango value chain in Côte d’Ivoire is linked to poor agricultural practices and postharvest losses due to climateric characteristics of the fruit. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of bioactive edible coating made of garlic extract and cassava starch as a novel approach to enhance the postharvest quality and shelf-life of Keitt mango fruit.

A study was undertaken to manage two factors that are responsible for reduced market value in banana cv. Yelakki namely ethylene biosynthesis and microbial deterioration. Freshly harvested stage 2 banana fruits treated with chemicals, 1-methylcyclopropene (1- MCP) and poly hexa methylene guanidine (PHMG) at different concentrations and stored in corrugated fiber board boxes at ambient condition for 15 days.

Banana is one of the most important crop plants grown in the tropics and sub-tropics. It is a climacteric fruit and undergoes ethylene dependent ripening. Once ripening is initiated, it proceeds at a fast rate making postharvest life short, which can result in heavy economic losses.

Banana fruit were exposed to hexanal vapour at 600, 900 and 1200 ppm for two and four h at 27±2°C. Fruits were then stored at 27±2 ° C with 65-75% relative humidity and latter assessed for quality. The rate of respiration, increase in TSS and loss of firmness were affected negatively by hexanal vapour treatment. Changes in the peel colour were also slowed compared to untreated fruits.

A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of exogenous application of putrescine and spermine (Polyamine) on postharvest physiological and biochemical behavior of banana cv. Grand Naine. Mature unripe bananas were dipped in varied concentrations of putrescine (PUT) (1 mM, 3 mM and 6 mM) and spermine (SPM) (1 μM, 5 μM and 10 μM) aqueous solution and stored at cold storage (13 °C ± 1, 85 % RH). Dipping of bananas in distilled water served as control.
