The presence of injuries was reduced by all types of good practices, applied alone or in combination. Where good harvesting and handling practices were performed, the incidence of bruising was reduced from 93.3% in the non-treated control to 37.7% and symptoms of rot were not detected.

In India, presently about 35 to 40 per cent of the onion is estimated to be lost as postharvest losses during various operations including handling and storage. Serious losses occur during storage due to sprouting and rotting. Keeping this in view, an investigation was carried out to study the effect of different packing and storage methods on storage life of aggregatum onion cv. CO on 5.

A study was conducted to assess the microbial load on lemon fruits at different postharvest handling stages. After harvesting, there are six different post-harvest handling stages were identified and they are collection, grading, packaging, transportation, wholesaler and retailer stages of fruits. And it was found that the microbial load was suddenly increases at Transportation stage and after it the microbial load continuously increases at subsequent stages i.e. at wholesaler and retailer level. Not only plant pathogenic microorganisms but also the human pathogenic microbes such as E.

c Oysters (Crassostrea gasar) are globally important but highly susceptible to microbial hazards. Critical control points (CCPs) for oyster safety involving 10 ppm calcium hypochlorite Ca(OCl)2, storage temperatures and traditional postharvest practices were employed. Microbiological and physico-chemical characteristics were analyzed. Un-iced storage (27-35oC) resulted in significant total viable counts (TVCs) exceeding recommended limits (approx. 5 log10 cfu/g). Diverse microbial profiles and hazardous levels occurred in traditionally handled samples compared to Ca(OCl)2 treated samples.

Prolonging the post-harvest life is essential to assure more life of flowers. For prolonging vase life, we should study about the pre-harvest, harvest and postharvest factors of flower crops that ultimately affects the flower life. There are a series of steps involved to prepare flowers for market after harvesting known as post-harvest handling. These steps include: Harvesting, Conditioning, Pre-cooling, Pulsing, Grading, Bunching, Wrapping, Packaging, Storage, Transport and Sale.

Custard apple (Sitaphal) is a yellowish green fruit of the family of plant species Annona. The postharvest system for these fruits is not yet adequately developed, and therefore several handling problems are still common. Rapid softening of fruits after harvest, especially during transportation and marketing is a major ongoing problem. The shelf-life of custard apple fruit can be enhanced upto 12 days in modified atmosphere storage at 10°C, whereas pulp can be stored for six months with potassium meta-bisulphite.

Although production costs of organic specialty crops can be higher than conventional production, some organic commodity crops have lower costs of production than the same conventional crops. A recent study of corn and soybean production in Iowa found that organic farms had lower fertilizer and pesticide costs, but higher seed and machinery costs. On the average, the total cost of organic production was slightly lower than that of conventional production.

small water bodies like ponds now contributes 80% of the country’s inland fish production. However, future growth in freshwater aquaculture to meet rising demand for fish is likely to be constrained by limited supplies of land for digging new ponds and of water to fill them. In this context, reservoirs offer immense scope for increasing fish production.

Fresh fruit and vegetables have become a major part of Vietnam’s crop production, and have the potential to provide major export revenue. To enable Vietnam to exploit these markets and meet the stringent quality standards required, much greater attention needs to be placed on better postharvest handling, safety and packaging of fresh produce.
