Coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) were generally considered to be contaminants in the past having little clinical significance. Over the past two decades, these organisms have become recognized as important agents of human disease. S. epidermidis is the predominant agent in nosocomial infection, bacteremia, surgical wound and urinary tract infections. Their pathogenic potential is being increasingly understood and also causing problems to clinicians because of their drug resistance.

Nosocomial fungal infections in neonatal intensive care units are a serious emerging problem. However, the role of fungal bio-aerosols as the source of such infections has not been explored in the NICU setting. Hence, this study was done to know the fungal composition of aerosols in NICU as the source of neonatal nosocomial infections. 1m3 of NICU air was sampled fortnightly over 12 months onto SDA with chloramphenicol using a sieve type air sampler.

In conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) based on magnetic resonance data, each voxel is assumed to contain a single component having diffusion properties that can be fully represented by a single tensor. Even though this assumption can be valid in some cases, the general case involves the mixing of components, resulting in significant deviation from the single tensor model. Hence, a strategy that allows the decomposition of data based on a mixture model has the potential of enhancing the diagnostic value of DTI.

Currently, adult cells seem to have certain advantages regarding rapid clinical translation. Most biomaterials used in Tissue Engineering are based on acellular matrices or polyglycolic acid. Both materials must provide tissue support until the cells produce their own extracellular matrix. Ideally, they degrade thereafter without any toxic byproducts. Over the last years we started to understand the influence of the biomechanical environment allowing these cell-biomaterial composites to unfold their full functional potential.
