The present study was conducted to assess the behaviour of broiler birds in an open-sided house under supplemental lighting programme using light emitting diodes (LEDs) and incandescent light. To perform this study a total of 240 straight run commercial Vencobb broiler chicks were procured, distributed in four different light treatment groups i.e. Tw; white (650nm), Tg; green (565nm) and Tb; blue (430nm) light LED (3 Watt each) and incandescent light bulbs (60 Watt each) as control (Tc) in 12 pens (4x3 factorial design) and reared from day old to 6th week of age.

Air temperature and relative humidity are two primary environmental factors in terms of THI that determining the heat stress level in livestock. Heat stress has detrimental effects on egg production, egg quality of laying hen and reduced growth rate in broiler production. Exposure of environmental stress during the growing period of broilers has been coupled with undesirable meat quality. Heat stress has adverse effects on behaviour, welfare and immunity of poultry and decreases the egg production resulting in massive economic losses of farmer.

Nevertheless, there remains a need for research and development of housing systems that consider bird well-being, particularly with reference to concerns about restricted movement and lack of outlet for natural behaviour. Further basic and applied research is required to provide factual data on space requirements per bird; stocking density; and size, configuration, and construction of cages and other confinement systems.

Consideration should be given to the question of animal welfare before installing new equipment or adopting new husbandry systems. In general, the greater the restriction imposed on an animal and the greater the complexity of the system or the degree of control that is exercised over temperature, air flow, or food supply, the less the animal is able to use its instinctive behaviour to modify the effect of unfavourable conditions and the greater the chance of suffering if mechanical or electrical failure occurs.
