Prediction of secondary

Molecules and assemblies of molecules with well-defined secondary structures have been designed and characterized by controllingnoncovalent interactions. By specifying intermolecular interactions, a class of information-storing molecular duplexes have been successfully developed. These H-bonded molecular duplexes demonstrate programmable, sequence-specificity and predictable, tunable stabilities. Based on these highly specific molecular zippers (or glues), a systematic approach todesigning self-assembled structures is now feasible. ...

Secondary transmembrane transport carriers fall into families and super-families allowing prediction of structure and function. Here we describe hundreds of sequenced homologues that belong to six families within a novel superfamily, the bile⁄arsenite⁄riboflavin transporter (BART) super-family, of transport systems and putative signalling proteins.

In plant secondary metabolism, b-acetal ester-dependent acyltransferases, such as the 1-O-sinapoyl-b-glucose:l-malate sinapoyltransferase (SMT; EC 2.3.1.92), are homologous to serine carboxypeptidases. Mutant analyses and modeling of Arabidopsis SMT (AtSMT) have predicted amino acid residues involved in substrate recognition and catalysis, confirming the main functional elements conserved within the serine carboxypeptidase pro-tein family.

The class of nonribosomally assembled siderophores encompasses a multi-tude of structurally diverse natural products. The genome of the erythro-mycin-producing strainSaccharopolyspora erythraeacontains 25 secondary metabolite gene clusters that are mostly considered to be orphan, including two that are responsible for siderophore assembly.
