Reaction of methyl 2-aryl-5-(chlorosulfonyl)-1,3-oxazole-4-carboxylates with 1H-pyrazol-5-amines and 1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-amines proceeds with the participation of endocyclic aminoazole nitrogen atoms to yield products containing a primary amino group.

Two novel pore-forming peptides have been isolated from the venom of the South-African scorpion Opistophtalmus carinatus. These peptides,designated opistoporin 1 and 2, differ by only one amino acid and belong to a group of a-helical,cationic peptides. For the first time,a comparison of the primary structures ofa-helical pore-forming peptides from scorpion venom was undertaken.

The different roles of ubiquinone-10 (UQ10) at the primary and secondary quinone (QAand QB) binding sites ofRho-dobacter sphaeroidesR26 reaction centres are governed by the protein microenvironment. The 4C¼O carbonyl group of QAis unusually strongly hydrogen-bonded, in contrast to QB. This asymmetric binding seems to determine their dif-ferent functions.
