Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common intracapsular fracture in the elderly as a result of osteoporosis, which tends to increase with humans’ extended longevity. Regarding treatment for undisplaced FNF, internal fixation is mostly used, while primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is used for older patients with displaced FNF because of the high rate of avascular necrosis and nonunion.

Degeneration of cartilage will change load distribution, affecting bone remodeling progress and trabecular structure and strength. However, in human primary osteoporosis, whether cartilage lesions would also affect properties beneath trabecular bone remains unknown. In this study, we explored the differences in local trabecular properties between osteoporosis patients with and without cartilage lesions.

Cementless hip cups need sufficient primary tilting stability to achieve osseointegration. The aim of the study was to assess differences of the primary implant stability in osteoporotic bone and in bone with normal bone density. To assess the influence of different cup designs, two types of threaded and two types of press-fit cups were tested.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are common, and are associated with reduced functioning and health related quality of life. The primary aims of this randomized controlled trial are to examine the immediate and long-term effects of a 12-weeks supervised group exercise programme on habitual walking speed in older women with osteoporosis and a history of vertebral fracture.

Several drugs have become available for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, screening and treatment of patients with a high fracture risk is currently not recommended in the Netherlands, because the effectiveness of bone sparing drugs has not been demonstrated in the general primary care population.

Oestrogen-deficiency induced by menopause is associated with reduced bone density and primary osteoporosis, resulting in an increased risk of fracture. While the exact etiology of menopause-induced primary osteoporotic bone loss is not fully known, members of the tumour necrosis factor super family (TNFSF) are known to play a role.

Quantification of vertebral bone marrow (VBM) water–fat composition has been proposed as advanced imaging biomarker for osteoporosis. Estrogen deficiency is the primary reason for trabecular bone loss in postmenopausal women. By reducing estrogen levels aromatase inhibitors (AI) as part of breast cancer therapy promote bone loss.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) is the most common type of primary osteoporosis. ESR1 polymorphism rs2234693 and rs9340799 has been widely studied as a candidate gene associated with PMO, however, the findings were inconclusive.

The optimal treatment of osteoporosis after reconstruction surgery for osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) remains unclear. In this multicentre retrospective study, we investigated the effects of typically used agents for osteoporosis, namely, bisphosphonates (BP) and teriparatide (TP), on surgical results in patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

A key factor in regulating bone absorption is the proportion of RANKL/OPG. Although many reports showing diverse transcription factors or epigenetic modification could be responsible for regulating RANKL&OPG ratio, there is still little exploration on promoter methylation status of both genes in osteoporotic bone tissues.

Unlike stratospheric ozone that protects life on earth, tropospheric ozone is highly toxic and is the main pollutant of the atmosphere of industrialized countries and cities. Its precursors are emanated from industrial activities and traffic. Generated by lightning, photochemical reactions or with free radicals, it has a density of 1.66 times greater than air and is maintained close to the ground. It decomposes easily, generating free radicals with oxidizing power. The main primary pollutants leading to ozone formation are nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and methane.

A young woman confronted with a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can expect lifelong complications arising from the disease itself, as well as the therapies used to treat this condition. About 50–70 per cent of SLE patients experience inflammation of the kidneys. As such, the young woman can expect to be treated with high doses of corticosteroids, often accompanied by the alkylating agent cyclophosphamide.

We think this book is unique in that it uses a novel and logical approach to present discussions of this topic from three general perspectives: scientific, social, and economic, and the integration within these important areas. We think this book is somewhat different than other environmental management books since we offer a more balanced view of the topic – many of the books available today concentrate primarily on just one of these three perspectives.

Sympathetically Maintained Pain Patients with peripheral nerve injury can develop a severe burning pain (causalgia) in the region innervated by the nerve. The pain typically begins after a delay of hours to days or even weeks. The pain is accompanied by swelling of the extremity, periarticular osteoporosis, and arthritic changes in the distal joints. The pain is dramatically and immediately relieved by blocking the sympathetic innervation of the affected extremity.
