Ebook "Male germline stem cells: Developmental and regenerative potential" covers many of the fundamental issues now being explored by today’s generation of stem cell researchers, including the field’s potential for regenerative medicine. Ranging from an assessment of the pluripotency of primordial germ cells and their possible applications in treating testicular cancer, to the recovery of once-mordant fertilization-competent sperm, this volume has it all.

Ebook "Development and reproduction in humans and animal model species" describes human development including sexual reproduction and stem cell research with the development of model organisms that are accessible to genetic and experimental analysis in readily understandable texts and 315 multi-colored graphics. The introductory account of model organisms selected from the entire animal kingdom presents general principles, which are then outlined in subsequent chapters devoted to, for example, sexual development;...

A growing body of evidence suggests that certain epiphenotypes can be passed across generations via both the male and female germlines of mammals. These observations have been difficult to explain owing to a global loss of the majority of known epigenetic marks present in parental chromosomes during primordial germ cell development and after fertilization.

Mitochondria are organelles that fulfill a fundamental role in cell bioenergetics, as well as in other processes like cell signaling and death. Small non-coding RNAs (sncRNA) are now being considered as pivotal posttranscriptional regulators, widening the landscape of their diversity and functions. In mammalian cells, small RNAs encoded by the mitochondrial genome, mitosRNAs were discovered recently, although their biological role remains uncertain.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) provide an excellent tool to better understand ancestor–descendent relationships as well as the efficiency and molecular mechanisms governing pluripotency in the reprogramming of somatic cells, since the latter type of cells have a relatively lower efficiency of conversion to pluripotent cells.

The nuage is a unique organelle in animal germ cells that is known as an electron-dense amorphous structure in the perinuclear region. Although the nuage is essential for primordial germ cell (PGC) determination and devel-opment, its roles and functions are poorly understood.

Primary germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the testis, arising by the malignant transformation of primordial germ cells, constitute 95% of all testicular neoplasms. Infrequently, GCTs arise from an extragonadal site, including the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and, very rarely, the pineal gland. This disease is notable for the young age of the afflicted patients, the totipotent capacity for differentiation of the tumor cells, and its curability; about 95% of newly diagnosed patients are cured.

The climacteric, or perimenopause, is that phase of the aging process in which a woman passes from reproductive to nonreproductive capability (generally age 45–55 years). The perimenopause normally lasts 4 years and is marked by altered ovarian function (e.g., cycle length increases or decreases and anovulation is more common). Menopause is defined as permanent cessation of menstruation following the characteristic altered ovarian function. The physiology of the climacteric requires a brief review of ovarian physiology.
