  • Cryptography is concerned with the conceptualization, definition, and construction of computing systems that address security concerns. The design of cryptographic systems must be based on firm foundations. This book presents a rigorous and systematic treatment of the foundational issues: defining cryptographic tasks and solving new cryptographic problems using existing tools. It focuses on the basic mathematical tools: computational difficulty (one-way functions), pseudorandomness, and zero-knowledge proofs.

  • Cellular memory is a ubiquitous function of biological systems. By generating a sustained response to a transient inductive stimulus, often due to bistability, memory is central to the robust control of many important biological processes. However, our understanding of the origins of cellular memory remains incomplete.

  • The Narmada is the largest west-flowing peninsular river ranks seventh in terms of water discharge (38km3 /yr) in India. A number of dams have been constructed on the Narmada River and its tributaries, mainly for the purpose of electric power generation, irrigation and for controlling floods. The objective of this paper is to calculate minimum flow of Narmada River which is necessary to protect ecosystem and biodiversity at downstream site of dam which is constructed across Narmada River and its tributaries.

  • In this research paper, the theoretical description of a reparamatrization of a discrete two-parameter Poisson Lindley Distribution, of which Sankaran’s (1970) one parameter Poisson Lindley Distribution is a special case, is derived by compounding a Poisson Distribution with two parameters Lindley Distribution for modeling waiting and survival times data of Shanker et al. (2012).The first four moments of this distribution have derived. Estimation of the parameters by using method of moments and maximum likely hood method has been discussed.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a new and an alternative differential evolution (ADE) algorithm for solving unconstrained global optimization problems. In the new algorithm, a new directed mutation rule is introduced based on the weighted difference vector between the best and the worst individuals of a particular generation. The mutation rule is combined with the basic mutation strategy through a linear decreasing probability rule. This modification is shown to enhance the local search ability of the basic DE and to increase the convergence rate.

  • A Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based classification technique is employed for a quantitative global assessment of brain tissue changes by using pixel intensities and contrast generated by b-values in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). A hemisphere approach is also proposed. A GMM identifies the variability in the main brain tissues at a macroscopic scale rather than searching for tumours or affected areas. The asymmetries of the mixture distributions between the hemispheres could be used as a sensitive, faster tool for early diagnosis.

  • In this paper, two multivariate analysis methods (covariance and conditional subjective probability density function) were presented and applied to a simple PSS. The methods followed a generalized procedure for evaluating t-h reliability based on dependency consideration. A passively water-cooled steam generator was used to demonstrate the dependency of the identified key CPs using the methods.

  • In this paper, we study a single server queuing model with retention of reneging customers. The transient solution of the model is derived using probability generating function technique. The time-dependent mean and variance of the model are also obtained. Some important special cases of the model are derived and discussed. Finally, based on the numerical example, the transient performance analysis of the model is performed.

  • We present a new method for calculating the probability of error per symbol (Symbol Error Probability, SEP) of M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (MQAM) over a slow, flat, identically independently distributed Rician fading channels. Since fading is one of the major constraints in wireless communications, the diversity modulation technique is used for the efficient transfer of message signals.

  • One of the major problems one is faced with when decomposing words into their constituent parts is ambiguity: the generation of multiple analyses for one input word, many of which are implausible. In order to deal with ambiguity, the MORphological PArser MORPA is provided with a probabilistic context-free grammar (PCFG), i.e. it combines a "conventional" context-free morphological grammar to filter out ungrammatical segmentations with a probability-based scoring function which determines the likelihood of each successful parse. ...

  • In the present paper we argue that the so-called sentence adverbials (typically, adverbs like probably, admittedly,...) should be generated, in the framework of Functional Generative Description, by means of a special deep case - Complementation of Attitude (CA) on grounds of their special behaviour in the topic-focus articulation (TFA) of a sentence.

  • Processing discourse connectives is important for tasks such as discourse parsing and generation. For these tasks, it is useful to know which connectives can signal the same coherence relations. This paper presents experiments into modelling the substitutability of discourse connectives. It shows that substitutability effects distributional similarity. A novel variancebased function for comparing probability distributions is found to assist in predicting substitutability.

  • In general we do not like to wait. But reduction of the waiting time usually requires extra investments. To decide whether or not to invest, it is important to know the e ect of the investment on the waiting time. So we need models and techniques to analyse such situations. In this course we treat a number of elementary queueing models. Attention is paid to methods for the analysis of these models, and also to applications of queueing models.
