Muscadine (Muscadinia rotundifolia) is known as a resistance source to many pests and diseases in grapevine. Based on a high-resolution linkage map and a segregating grapevine backcross progeny, the first QTLs for resistance to D. vitifoliae and to X. index were identified from a muscadine source.

Two hundred progenies of four crosses of rice were evaluated to study the genetic variability in segregating generations for yield and bran oil content. The data was recorded on five randomly selected plants for ten quantitative and four grain quality characters. The analysis of variance showed significant differences for 14 characters studied, indicating the presence of high genetic variability among the progenies.

The investigation was focused on transfer of the Fusarium wilt resistance into elite cultivar. Screening of chickpea parents (ICC 506 EB and Vijay), 196 RIL’s (Obtained from ICRISAT, Hyderabad), F2and BC1F1 populations for Fusarium wilt resistance were done by Pot culture method and wilt sick plot method. The BC1F1 segregated in 1:1 ratio for resistance and susceptibility and F2 progenies segregated in a ratio of 1 resistant and 3 susceptible.

Progenies from a cross between ‘Gopaldoddiga’ and ‘ARB6’ cultivars were selected on the basis of combining ability analysis to study the genetics of transgressive segregation for zinc content and agronomic traits using augmented designs. Results revealed the presence of general combining ability and specific combining ability effects, and the parents were found to be good general combiners for zinc in grains, 100 grains weight and grain yield per plant.

A field study was carried out involving three F2 and F3 population of barnyard millet crosses during 2016-2017. The high PCV and GCV values and high heritability were noticed in F2 population of three crosses for number of tillers, iron and zinc content, indicated the predominance of additive gene effects in their expression and would respond to selection effectively as they are least influenced by environment.

The present experiment comprised of three parents Meha, GJM-1006 and GJM-1008 their 30 F4 progenies derived from the crosses Meha x GJM-1006 (17 progenies) and Meha x GJM-1008 (13 progenies). Seed yield per plant was strongly and positively associated with the yield components like days to 50 % flowering, plant height, primary branches per plant, days to maturity, pods per plant, 100 seed weight, seeds per plant and clusters per plant in the two segregating populations except days to 50 % flowering and days to maturity in the cross Meha x GJM-1006.

Genetic variability is prerequisite for any crop improvement program as it helps breeders in selecting the superior plants in segregating generations. Genetic variability for yield and its contributing traits in F3 and F4 generations derived from the cross WH 711 / WH 542 was assessed. The 238 F3 and F4 progenies along with parents were characterized on the basis of 12 morpho-physiological traits. The study revealed highly significant difference among the progenies for yield and its contributing traits.

Transgressive segregation produces hybrid progeny phenotypes that exceed the parental phenotypes. Unlike heterosis, extreme phenotypes caused by transgressive segregation are heritably stable. Maximum genetic variation in F2 generation provides the first opportunity for selection of individual plants, any one of which may end up into a new cultivar. F2 plants that surpassed the parental limits were observed in both the crosses for all the traits viz.
