Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy is a rare multisystem autosomal recessive disease caused by mutations in the TYMP gene, that encodes for thymidine phosphorylase. Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy is a progressive degenerative disease characterized by a distinctive tetrad of gastrointestinal dysmotility, peripheral neuropathy, ophthalmoplegia with ptosis, and asymptomatic leukoencephalopathy.

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a common and significant problem in equine athletes. It is a disease of the entire joint, with the synovium thought to be a key player in disease onset and progression due to its role in inflammation. The development of effective tools for early diagnosis and treatment of PTOA remains an elusive goal.

The progression of disc degeneration is generally believed to be associated with low back pain and/or degenerative lumbar diseases, especially in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate changes in lumbar disc height using radiographic measurements and to investigate risk factors for development of disc height narrowing of the elderly.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a primary cause of degenerative disc diseases; however, the mechanisms underlying the degeneration remain unclear. The immunoinflammatory response plays an important role in IVDD progression.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neuro-degenerative disruption of the brain which involves in large scale transcriptomic variation. The disease does not impact every regions of the brain at the same time, instead it progresses slowly involving somewhat sequential interaction with different regions.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive destruction of articular cartilage, thinning and eventual wearing of articular cartilage and resulted in painful and limited joint movement. Horses presented to Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, Chennai with a history of lameness and corresponding clinical signs, suggestive of osteoarthritis were included in this study. 94 horses were diagnosed with lameness out of 177.

Over recent years stem cells have stood out as a promising tool for regenerative medicine, providing alternative therapeutic solutions for a large number of diseases. Many clinical trials using stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells are focused on the repair and regeneration of various tissues and organs in degenerative diseases, whose current treatment only succeeds in slowing down the progression of the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related, progressive degenerative dis-order that is characterized by synapse and neuron loss in the brain and the accumulation of protein-containing deposits (referred to as ‘senile plaques’) and neurofibrillary tangles. Insoluble amyloid b-peptide (Ab) fibrillar aggregates found in extracellular plaques have long been thought to cause the neurodegenerative cascades of AD.

Kuru was the first chronic degenerative disease of man shown to be a slow virus infection, with incubation periods measured in years and with a pro- gressive accumulative pathology always leading to death. This established that virus infections of man could, after long delay, produce chronic degenera- tive disease and disease with apparent heredofamilial patterns of occurrence, and with none of the inflammatory responses regularly associated with viral infections.
