Promoting antibiotic resistance
-
Nowadays, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in livestock production leads to the appearance of antibiotic resistant strains that promotes the use of probiotics in feed to minimise/replace antibiotic consumption. Among them, Bacilli are common supplements for feed effectiveness and livestock health benefits.

Faced with national requirements to promote antimicrobial stewardship and reduce drug-resistant infections, community hospitals are challenged to make the best use of existing resources. Eighteen months after building antibiotic decision support into our electronic order platform, high-risk antibiotic use decreased by 83% (P < .001) at our community hospital. Hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile infections declined 24% (P ¼ .07).

The increasing threat of bacterial resistance promotes the need for antibiotic stewardship programs to foster responsible antimicrobial use. Therefore, guidelines for prudent use supported by an online stewardship tool (AntibioticScout.ch) were introduced in Switzerland in December 2016. They recommend (with decreasing preference) a first, second or third line antimicrobial for treatment.

Antibiotics are commonly added to livestock feeds in sub-therapeutic doses as growth promoters and for prophylaxis against pathogenic microbes, especially those implicated in diarrhoea. While this practice has improved livestock production, it is a major cause of antimicrobial resistance in microbes affecting livestock and humans.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which is affected by environmental pollution and climate change, promotes genetic communication, changing bacterial pathogenicity and drug resistance. However, few studies have been conducted on the effect of HGT on the high pathogenicity and drug resistance of the opportunistic pathogen Vibrio harveyi.

Microbial biofilms in indwelling urinary catheters promote persistent and recurrent infections. This is due to their complex nature and resistance to commonly used antibiotics that are a challenge to management of catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). The present study was conducted to detect biofilm production by isolates from patients with CAUTI, and their association with antibiotic resistance.

Now-a-days, many antibiotics are being used to control infectious diseases. Inappropriate use of antibiotics leads to emergence of highly resistant bacteria. The increasing resistance of microorganism to conventional chemicals and drugs is a serious global problem that has opened up the promotion research into the identification of new biocides with broad activity.

A wide range of microorganisms present in industrial effluent, exposed to different heavy metals, develop tolerance to such metal. Adaptation to the adverse environmental condition make them resistant to different antibiotics and various characters exhibited by them need to be explored. Twenty numbers of bacteria isolated from the effluent of a steel plant showed tolerance to heavy metals like Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Hg and resistance to different antibiotics.

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are common in children. The cause of URTIs is usually viral, but parents’ attitudes often contribute to inappropriate prescription of antibiotics, promoting antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotics usage in animal production has been restricted by World Health Organization (WHO) due to their negative effects leading to the development of antibiotics resistant bacteria (superbugs) in animals and humans. The search for alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters has led to various researches in phytomedicine.

Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) are most frequently isolated bacteria from ascitic fluid aspirate of patients with Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). Aetiology of SBP has been changing in recent years with increased involvement of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria as a result of production of various β-lactamases. The present study was done for detection of different β-lactamases and their co-existence by noveldisc placement method among GNB isolates from patients with SBP.

Antibiotics play an indispensable role in animal health, welfare and production management. They find their place is as sub-therapeutic, prophylactic, metaphylactic and therapeutic agents for use in livestock sector. However, the possibility for transfer of antibiotics resistance genes among livestock through food chain and environment is probably a direct threat to public health. This review focuses on the prudential use of antibiotics and advocating various practices which can potentially minimize the usage of antibiotics in livestock production system.

The study was aimed to assess the uses of antibiotic residues consumed in Khartoum State; Sudan. The problem of the study is the usage of antibiotics to food producing animals for treatment, prophylaxis and as growth promoters results in deposition of their residues in various organs and tissues. These residues after consumption via meat, milk and their products may cause adverse side effect such as toxicity, bacterial resistance, allergic reactions and many different side effect may lead to death.
