High-dose radiotherapy is a key treatment for patients with NACC. This study reported the long-term efficacy and safety of particle beam radiation therapy (PBRT) for NACC.

Radical esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma has improved survival, but the rate of recurrence is high. Patients of recurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after failure of chemotherapy have a poor prognosis. We herein report the achievement of long-term survival after definitive proton beam therapy for oligorecurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after failure of chemotherapy.

Breast cancer infrequently metastasizes to the sternum as solitary metastasis. We experienced successful treatment with proton beam therapy for a case of sternal metastasis of breast cancer. This case demonstrates for the first time the role of proton therapy in the treatment of oligometastatic sternal metastasis with limited tolerance of normal tissue due to previous photon irradiation.

Locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), accounting for about 30% of PDAC patients, is difficult to cure by radical resection or systemic chemotherapy alone. A multidisciplinary strategy is required and our TT-LAP trial aims to evaluate whether triple-modal treatment with proton beam therapy (PBT), hyperthermia, and gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel is a safe and synergistically effective treatment for patients with locally advanced PDAC.

This work presents the logical design, connections between NIM and VME electronic modules, and the data acquisition programming to build a complete detector readout system. A study on the superconducting RF linac is underway in order to increase the beam energy up to 1 GeV by extending the Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) 100-MeV linac. The operating frequency of the PEFP superconducting linac (SCL) is 700 MHz, which is determined by the fact that the frequency of the existing normal conducting linac is 350 MHz.

The results show that high-energy neutrons with En > 20 MeV are of small fraction (2.6%) in the neutron source, but their contribution to the source efficiency is about 23% for the large scale ADS. Based on this, a neutron source efficiency correction factor is proposed. Tests show that the new correction method works well in the ADS calculation. This method can effectively improve the accuracy of the prediction of the proton beam current.

The cross-sections for the formation of 89Nb and 90Nb radionuclides in proton induced nuclear reactions on zirconium were measured by using the well known activation method. The natural zirconium (natZr) target and copper (natCu) monitor foils were irradiated by 27.7 MeV proton beam at the MC50 Cyclotron of the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Science (KIRAMS), Korea. The induced gamma activities of the reaction products were measured by a coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) detector coupled to a PC-based multichannel analyzer.
