Protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica
-
Amoebozoa is a eukaryotic supergroup composed of unicellular and multicellular amoebic protozoa (e.g. Acanthamoeba, Dictyostelium, and Entamoeba). They are model organisms for studies in cellular and evolutionary biology and are of medical and veterinary importance.

The RNA interference (RNAi) pathway is a gene regulation mechanism that utilizes small RNA (sRNA) and Argonaute (Ago) proteins to silence target genes. Our previous work identified a functional RNAi pathway in the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, including abundant 27 nt antisense sRNA populations which associate with EhAgo2–2 protein.

Parasitic infections, caused by intestinal helminths and protozoan parasites, are among the most prevalent infections in developing countries, while in developed countries, gastrointestinal infections are caused more commonly by protozoan parasites compared to helminths.

A putative phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PGDH), which catalyzes the oxidation ofD-phosphoglycerate to 3-phosphohydroxypyruvate in the so-called phosphorylated serine metabolic pathway, from the enteric protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica was characterized. The E. histolyticaPGDH gene (EhPGDH) encodes a protein of 299 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 33.5 kDa and an isoelectric point of8.11. EhPGDHshowed high homology to PGDH from bacteroides and another enteric protozoan ciliate,Entodinium caudatum. ...

Methioninec-lyase (MGL) (EC 4.4.1.11), which is present in certain lin-eages of bacteria, plants, and protozoa but missing in mammals, catalyzes the single-step degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids (SAAs) to a-keto acids, ammonia, and thiol compounds.
