Psychological imagination

In this article I reflect on – and celebrate - the increasing eclecticism and creativity within Qualitative Psychology. Diverse forms of hybrid qualitative research, knowledge production and dissemination are referenced, including performative, fictional and digital iterations, and the potential for participant-centred, co-produced, democratic practices is promoted.

Simply put, this book is about how nature is ‘done’, how it is practised, how it materializes as an active partner in and through those practices. Perhaps, unlike many other volumes, I am not especially concerned here with how nature is imagined, represented, thought or conceived. Rather, imagining, representing and thinking are treated as activities which take their place alongside many other practices (like growing, infecting, digging, counting), some of which do not have people at their centre. This last point is crucial.

Our main contribution is to study a variable, international soccer results, that has particu- larly attractive properties as a measure of mood. While extensive psychological evidence, which we review below, shows that sports in general have a significant effect on mood, TV viewing figures, media coverage, and merchandise sales suggest that soccer in particular is of “national interest” in many of the countries we study. 1 It is hard to imagine other regular events that produce such substantial and correlated mood swings in a large proportion of a country’s pop- ulation.

On a remote asteroid a garrison of human explorers/colonizers is gradually succumbing to a strange psychological condition: one by one people start believing that they had become plants. A psychiatrist is assigned to work with these unusual cases, and based on the reports that he hears decides to visit the asteroid. There he searches for the ultimate cause of the underlying "psychosis", but it may be that the psychological state is just a reflection of some underlying and disturbing reality.
