Disease transposition of the great arteries is usually screened antenatally and operated arterial switch in the period before 2 weeks of age because without surgical intervention, 90% of children with dying before 6 months of age. However, there are still a small number of patients presenting late who are not suitable for arterial switch operation. Senning or Mustard procedures are the solutions to this situation.

In both humans and animals, anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare congenital coronary artery anomaly. In veterinary medicine, ALCAPA is reported to be discovered only during autopsy or necropsy, and diagnostic methods and prognosis remain poorly understood in dogs.

Pulmonary hypertension is characterized by a mediator imbalance with a predominance of vasoconstriction and cell proliferation involving all layers of the vessel. The end result is an increase in pulmonary vascular resistance, increased workload of the right ventricle, and right ventricular hypertrophy to maintain an adequate flow. Subsequently, right ventricular dilatation ensues the signs and symptoms of right heart failure occurence.
