Sputum smear conversion is a key indicator of treatment response and reduced infectivity among bacteriologically confrmed pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. This study aimed at estimating sputum smear conversion and identifying factors hindering sputum smear conversion among bacteriologically confrmed PTB cases in East Gojjam Zone, Northwest Ethiopia.

Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is defined as any bacteriologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed case of TB involving organs other than the lungs. It is frequently a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge with paucity of data available.

The management and control of pulmonary bacteriologically confirmed (PBC) tuberculosis (TB) also known as infectious TB is important not only to monitor for resistance but also to check for severity, treatment response and limit its spread.

Early detection of pulmonary contamination in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) is essential since these children are vulnerable to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) colonization. In Iran, home nebulization of antibiotics is a widespread practice in treatment for patients with CF and, to the best our knowledge, no bacteriological surveys have been conducted till date in this regard.

Bacteriological confirmation plays a key role in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Many systems have been developed in the recent years apart from traditional microscopy and culture on Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) medium. The objective of this study is to compare the rate of detection of Mycobacteria by acid fast staining, LJ medium and Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT). Hundred patients with clinical suspicion of pulmonary tuberculosis attending a tertiary care hospital over a period of one and a half years were enrolled in the study.

By WHO forecasts, a further increase in the prevalence and mortality of COPD among people of working age is predicted, due to uncontrolled environmental pollution, a tobacco pandemic, an increase in the level of allergens and a genetic predisposition. In chronization and progression of COPD, there is a violation of cellular and humoral immunity, production of pro-inflammatory cytokines of phagocytic cell activity that contribute to the persistence of the inflammatory process in the lungs.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a spectrum of airway diseases that has chronic bronchitis at one end and emphysema at other end. COPD is the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most of the episodes (80%) of AECOPD are triggered by infections mainly affecting the lower respiratory tract by respiratory viruses, atypical bacteria and aerobic Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.

Appropriate treatment of smear-positive cases can render most of them noninfectious rapidly, generally within two weeks. Generally, infectivity decreases many fold in the first 2 days in most individuals on standard short course chemotherapy. Therefore, the most effective intervention for reducing infectiousness is treatment of the case, and institution of a mechanism which will guarantee provision of the medications, i.e. the patient will be on DOT. Under these circumstances, it is perfectly reasonable to treat most patients as an outpatient with a plan to ensure treatment completion....

In this study in formations of the participants were evaluated retrospectively from the file records. The total number of recorded in-house contacts of 153 pulmonary tuberculosis patients was 753 of whom 625 patients came to control and were documented for treatment and follow up in Istanbul Eyup Tuberculosis Dispensary between January 2001 and December 2002.

Extrapulmonary organ involvement in human immunodefiaency virus (HIV)-infected patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is reported to be 26%, however, the clinical predictors of extrapulmonary involvement in pulmonary TB patients has not been reported yet. We tried to determine the clinical predictors of presence of extrapulmonary involvement in patients with pulmonary TB. Cross-sectional study was performed including all adult patients with culture-proven pulmonary TB diagnosed between January 1, 2004 and July 30, 2006, at a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea.

An infectious case of pulmonary tuberculosis is diagnosed by demonstrating tubercle bacilli in sputum. The laboratory methods available for this purpose are sputum microscopy, isolation of tubercle bacilli in culture followed by identification of the bacilli and animal pathogenicity tests. Evidence based on all the three methods establishes bacteriological diagnosis beyond any doubt, but even economically advanced countries may not consider such an elaborate procedure essential for routine diagnosis.
