Pulse growers

The majority of grassy weeds found in urdbean during kharif season include Echinochloa colona, E. crusgalli. In India, production of pulses is around 19.3 million tonnes (ESI 2015) with a very low average productivity of 764 kg/ha. Currently, total area under pulses is 26.3 million ha.

Chickpea is one of the most important pulse crops of Gujarat state. In Gujarat, Saurashtra region is one of the most remarkable regions for chickpea cultivation and production. Junagadh district of Saurashtra region is very good producer district. The Jammu and Kashmir has a varied type of climate from sub-tropical to cold arid. The main crops grown in the state are rice, maize, wheat, pulses, oil seeds, saffron etc. The cultivation of Saffron is mostly confined to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In Kashmir saffron cultivation is peculiar and the legend about its introduction in to Kashmir shows that it is an ancient industry about 2200 years’ old. It is the legendry crop of the welldrained plateau of Pampore. The present study is an attempt to analyse the cost, return and marketing of Saffron in Jammu and Kashmir.

Agricultural innovations and diffusion of new technologies are key drivers to achieve food security in the country besides providing farmers a competitive edge over traditional farming, thus facilitating better standards of living. In this context, cluster demonstrations is a novel approach to provide direct interface between scientists and farmers in planning, execution & monitoring phases of the demonstrations. Indian council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has launched Cluster Demonstrations Programme on pulse and oilseed crops in the year 2015-2016.

The present study was conducted by KVK, Jagatsinghpur during 2016-17 in the rabi seasons with sixty numbers frontline demonstrations across in two clusters of Bagoi village in kujanga block of district Jagatsinghpur. The results of demonstrations showed that farmers could increase the Green gram productivity by adopting improved variety and improved production technology. From the front line demonstrations, it was observed that the improved Green gram variety IPM-02-14recorded the higher yield (748kg/ha) compared to the farmers' practices variety (553 kg/ha).
