Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a biennial bulb crop, produced all over the world. It is attacked by many diseases, out of which Purple blotch of onion caused by Alternaria porri (Ellis) Neerg causing heavy yield loss in both bulb production and seed production. Native Bacillus were isolated from the rhizosphere of vegetables and ornamental crops of the SHUATS campus and were identified through bio-chemical tests.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most important commercial vegetable crop grown in India. In Karnataka, Northeastern Dry Zone is the potential area for the production of onion. The major constraints in the production of onion are diseases caused by fungi. The present investigation was undertaken to know the disease severity in Northern parts of Karnataka. A roving survey was conducted to know the percent disease severity (PDI) of purple blotch, stemphylium blight and basal rot of onion in districts of Northern parts of Karnataka during kharif 2014-15.

The incidence of Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria porri largely depends on meteorological parameters, location, cultivars susceptibility and cultural practices. Change of climate affects the disease incidence. Corelation of meteorological parameters on the natural occurrence of Alternaria blight was studied from 21/11/2012 to 19/03/2013 in sixteen meteorological weeks under field condition at experimental plot, Dept. of plant pathology, OUAT, Bhubaneswar. A survey was conducted in the onion growing fields of Allahabad district. For the survey ten villages viz., Hadha, Thanthanwa, Ghoorpur, Chaka, Pahlukapurwa, Karchana, Jari, Kanti, Soraon and Phoolpur were selected to evaluate the disease incidence of purple blotch of onion caused by Alternaria porri. From each village eight fields were from each the lowest incidence of purple blotch was found in Phoolpur (4.12%). The maximum was found (16.00%) in Jari village followed by Karchana (15.37%), Pahlukapurwa (14.87%), Kanti (14.75%), in 2016.

Onion (Allium cepa) is an important spices crop commercially grown in India. The production of bulbs is limited by certain diseases. The most serious one is the purple blotch caused by Alternaria porri (Ellis) Cif. Variability studies on cultural and morphological features of the pathogen are of immense use in understanding the nature of the pathogen. In this regard an experiment was conducted and it was revealed that the growth of the fungus was significantly highest (8.8 cm) in Czapeck's agar and lowest was in Tochinai’s agar (4.5 cm).

Purple blotch is the most destructive disease commonly prevailing in almost all onion growing pockets except in very cool production areas of the world. The present study was carried out to understand the diversity in Alternaria population causing purple blotch disease of onion. Out of fifty six geographical Alternaria isolates of Karnataka seventeen were selected as descriptive isolates based on morphological characteristics for understanding the genetic variability.

Four systemic fungicides viz., Folicur 25 EC (tebuconazole), Tilt 25 EC (propiconazole), Score 25 EC (difenoconazole), Amistar Top 325 SC (azoxystrobin 18.2% + difenoconazole 11.4%) and one non-systemic fungicide viz., Indofil M-45 75 WP (mancozeb) were evaluated under field conditions for their efficacy to manage purple blotch complex of onion caused by Alternaria porri and Stemphylium vesicarium. Field efficacy of the fungicides at different concentrations was determined in controlling the purple blotch complex of onion seed crop (cultivar PRO-6) during the Rabi season 2015- 16 and 2016-17.

Onion purple blotch caused by the fungus Alternaria porri is a major yield limiting factor in onion growing area. A survey was conducted to assess purple blotch disease severity in onion during kharif 2019 in Nashik district. The purple blotch disease severity ranged from 27.20 to 52.80 per cent. The highest disease severity noticed in Satana tahasil (52.80%) and lowest disease intensity was recorded in Nandgaon tahasil (27.20%) during kharif 2019. The highest purple blotch of onion was followed by Deola (51.20 %), Niphad (48.80%), Malegaon(43.20%), Chandwad (37.60%), Yeola (33.

Maharashtra ranks first in production of onion. Purple blotch [Alternaria porri (Ellis) Cif] is one of the severe onion diseases in Maharashtra causing higher yield losses. Chemical fungicides are effectively used to manage it, are responsible for environmental hazard and fungicidal resistance in the pathogens and sustainability of onion production. Oligochitosan is a deacetylated derivative of chitin obtained by gamma irradiation of chitosan. Present study was conducted to assess the effect of oligochitosan on management of purple blotch of onion.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is the important vegetable crop. Under favourable condition onion is attacked by various diseases. Out of which, purple blotch is caused by Alternaria porri and is one of the predominant disease of onion. In the present studies, efficacy of bioagents, botanicals and fungicides were tested against Alternaria porri in vitro and toxigenic potential of Alternaria porri. Among the fungicides, Thiram+Carboxin and Propineb (0.3%) has shown 100% mycelial inhibition of Alternaria porri. Maximum mycelial inhibition of Alternaria porri was observed with Ocimum sanctum (60.
