Pyometra in a bitch

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex (CEH-P) is one of the most common uteropathies in bitches. In diseases with mild or obscure clinical signs and normal uterine size, a diagnosis based on a clinical assessment might be incorrect.

In the present study an attempt was made to evaluate haematological as well as biochemical changes in pyometra affected bitches and was compared with control group. A total of 20 bitches of age group 6-10 years old irrespective of breed were clinically examined and diagnosed for pyometra.

A five year old unspayed female Labrador dog weighing 28 kilogram was presented in Veterinary Clinical Complex, LUVAS, Hisar with a history of dehydration, uterine discharge, distended abdomen, vomition, anorexia, Anuria, inability to walk and pyrexia. On clinical examination, the rectal temperature was recorded as 104.30 F, with swollen vulva and pus discharge. The bitch was treated with prostaglandins and antibiotics however, the bitch failed to respond the treatment. Based on the history, clinical observations, radiography and ultrasonography it was diagnosed as pyometra.

Canine pyometra is a common disease in bitches, middle-aged to old and dioestrous bitches are frequently affected. In the present study bitches suffering from pyometra show significantly higher resistance Doppler waveform of uterine arteries as compared to cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and normal dioestrus bitches. In case of dioestrus and CEH groups showed lower blood flow velocities when compared to pyometra groups. Conversely dioestrus and CEH groups show higher hemodynamic indices in comparison to pyometra groups.
