Ebook "Value addition of horticultural crops: Recent trends and future directions" combines several ideas and philosophies and provides a detailed discussion on the value addition of fruits, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floricultural crops and in forestry. Separate chapters address the packaging, preservation, drying, dehydration, total quality management and supply chain management of horticultural crops. The book explains value addition as a process of increasing the economic value and consumer appeal of a commodity with special reference to horticultural crops.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is known as the most important vegetable crop that is widely cultivated throughout the world. Improvements of the growth, development, and productivity have become core strategies for the sustainable development of tomato in many countries. Here, we performed an intensive summary of recent applications of genome editing in customizing the growth habits and fruit quality in tomato plants.

Pears (Pyrus spp.) are one of the most important fruit crops in temperate regions. Japanese pear breeding has been carried out for over 100 years, working to release new cultivars that have good fruit quality and other desirable traits. Local cultivar ‘Nijisseiki’ and its relatives, which have excellent fruit texture, have been repeatedly used as parents in the breeding program. This strategy has led to inbreeding within recent cultivars and selections.

The non-climacteric ‘Yellow’ melon (Cucumis melo, inodorus group) is an economically important crop and its quality is mainly determined by the sugar content. Thus, knowledge of sugar metabolism and its related pathways can contribute to the development of new field management and post-harvest practices, making it possible to deliver better quality fruits to consumers.

Mango, Mangifera indica L., an important tropical fruit crop, is grown for its sweet and aromatic fruits. Past improvement of this species has predominantly relied on chance seedlings derived from over 1000 cultivars in the Indian sub-continent with a large variation for fruit size, yield, biotic and abiotic stress resistance, and fruit quality among other traits. Historically, mango has been an orphan crop with very limited molecular information.

Banana is a well-established fruit crop of Gujarat region and more specifically cultivar Grand Nain is well adopted due to its good yield potential and quality parameters. Banana is nutrient loving crop so application of nitrogen and bio-fertilizers plays significant role in quality improvement of crop. By considering this fact presented experiment “Quality of banana cv. Grand Nain influenced by nitrogen and biofertilizers” was taken during 2018-19.

Continuous use of chemical fertilizers without organic sources poses soil health issues whereas organic manures using alone without inorganics could not be able to fulfill the requirement of high nutrient demanding crops due to the bulk and slow-acting nature of these organic fertilizer sources. However, neither organic fertilizers nor inorganic fertilizers alone can maintain productivity. The major yield limiting factors in crops production in Indian soils are NPS deficiencies.

The crop is mainly dependent on rainfed cultivation in the region and therefore keeping in view and taking all these into consideration the present investigation was carried out to find ways and means to increase the yield and reduce the cost of production so that there is enough fruit production to meet the requirement of the consumers.

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an important fruit crop of India and other sub-tropical and tropical countries of the world. Mango fruit is one of the most popular, nutritionally rich fruits with unique flavor, fragrance, taste, and health promoting qualities, making it number one among new functional foods, often labelled as “super fruits". In pre-harvest condition, several diseases are found on the mango which reduces the yield, decreases marketability and shelf life after harvest of the fruits.

Guava is an important fruit crops in tropical and subtropical regions. Edible coating used as alternative to waxes to enhance fruit quality and prolong storage and shelf life especially in soft fruits. Coating may cause off flavor results from anaerobic respiration. This investigation aims at prolong storage life and quality of guavas by enhance coating material properties through mixing xanthan with chitosan nanoparticles.

Vegetables and fruits are vital constituents of human diet, as it provides necessary minerals and nutrients to human body to carry out biological reactions and provide protection against various diseases and injuries. Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) is consider as cash crop in Asian countries and are fine source of vitamin C, potassium, folate, vitamin K, and other bioactive compounds including, phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, and alkaloids. Similar to other crops, tomato quality and yield is also affected by pests. Globally, approximately 37.8% of tomato yield is spoiled due to pests.

Custard apple is one of the most delicious arid fruits known mostly for its dessert and confectionery values. Annona squamosa, which is one of the most widely grown species of Annona. Though rich in its nutritional aspects, it is an under-utilized arid zone crop. It has also been proved that the plant contains several medicinal properties which include antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-infective and anti dyslipidemic properties.

Heterosis is one of the greatest practical achievements of plant breeding and has been extensively used in crop improvement in okra. The production of hybrid cultivars with higher fruit yield and quality characters has become increasingly important in recent years due to continuous demand. In the present study, 14 genetically diverse okra parents were crossed in Line x Tester fashion to explore magnitude of heterosis.

The flowering is delayed under longer period of stress which may be due to conditions like high and low temperature and low humidity condition. Singh and Chadha (1988) advocated that imposition of stress caused uniformity in flushing and intensity depended on amount of stress as measured by relative water content (RWC) in plant before alleviation.

India leads the world in banana production, producing around 18% of the worldwide crop of 139 million metric tonnes. In spite of this, its exports are minimal for various reasons. External appearance, internal and market quality of bananas are influenced by several factors, including production practices. Banana bunch cover is a physical protection method which will improves the visual quality of fruit by promoting skin colouration and reducing blemishes, but can also change the micro-environment for fruit development, which can have several beneficial effects on internal fruit quality.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a widely cultivated crop in the gourd family and plays an important role in our daily diet. However, the cucumber often suffers from disease during reproductive stage that affects the output and quality of cucumber. The commercial cultivars are highly susceptible to downy mildew disease which causes huge losses both in fruit quality and yield.

Micronutrients are essentially as important as macronutrients to have better growth, yield and quality in plants. The requirement of micronutrients (boron, iron, copper, zinc, manganese, magnesium and molybdenum) is only in traces, which is partly met from the soil or through chemical fertilizer or through other sources.

Scarcity of irrigation water in critical growth stages of the crop is one of the major causes of low productivity and decline of citrus orchards. Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is a recently proposed water saving technique in irrigated agriculture. The present study was planned with a hypothesis that the optimal RDI scheduling at early fruit growth period (EFGP), which coincides with summer months could save substantial amount of water, without significantly affecting the yield of ‘Kinnow’ mandarin plants.
