Quality of guava

‘Mutiara’ guava fruit is one of two leading guava cultivars sold in Indonesian markets. Its thin skin and climacteric-typed respiration shorten its shelf-life due to high transpiration and respiration rates. Eventhough 2.5% chitosan was proven to lengthen its shelf-life, the effect of ethylene trapped under chitosan coating needs to be blocked in order to increase its coating affectivity.

The ripe fruit contain approximately 79.50 per cent moisture, 15.25 per cent dry matter, 3.20 per cent crude fibre and little amount of ash. The TSS varies from 10.5-14.5 per cent. Several volatile compounds including hydrocarbons, alcohol and carbonyls have been found to be responsible for the characteristic flavor of guava. The decrease in astringency with advancement of maturity is ascribed to polymerization of leuco-anthocyanins.

An experiment was conducted in 12 year old planted guava (Psidium guajava L.) garden at Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) during the year 2014-15. The treatments comprised nine combinations of three ZnSO4 levels (0.50, 0.75, 1.00% solution) and three borax levels (0.2, 0.4, 0.6% solution) and one control of water spray. An adequate boron amendment ensures not only ample fruit set, but guarantees optimum fruit yield with excellent quality in terms of juice content, ratio between total soluble solids and acidity, and fruit peel colour (Srivastava and Singh 2005). An experiment was carried out to see the effect of plant growth regulators on yield and quality of guava cv. Allahabad safeda. Low production and poor quality of fruits are major constraints in guava production in Assam. The results showed significance difference among the treatments. The rainy crop is of inferior quality, infested with fruit flies and do not keep well, whereas the winter crop produces a better fruit quality, fetch a premium price and has a long shelf life.
