Information on population structure and genetic diversity of germplasm in a breeding programme is useful because it enhances judicious utilisation of genetic resources to achieve breeding objectives. Seventy early maturing provitamin A (PVA) quality protein maize (QPM) inbreds developed by the IITA- maize improvement programme were genotyped using 8171 DArTseq markers.

Development of QPM (Quality Protein Maize) with high lysine and tryptophan is foremost important task in enhancing nutritional quality in maize through breeding programme. Marker assisted selection is the most feasible way of developing QPM hybrids in short time. The present investigation deals with conversion of elite normal maize inbred lines BML6 and BML7 (parental lines of DHM117 hybrid) into QPM lines using marker assisted selection. The nutritional quality of maize is enhanced by introgression of the opaque2 (o2) gene along with numerous modifiers for kernel hardness.

Maize (Zea mays L) is one of the most versatile emerging crop grown in diverse season and ecologies. Protein being the primary structural and functional component of every cell is one of the important ingredient that determines the quality of food throughout the world. The biological value of protein is increased in its new genotype–QPM by lowering zein content to 30% as a result the concentration of two essential amino acid lysine and tryptophan is increased.

Impact of resistant starch accumulation on chemical composition and grain quality of maize genotypes
The present study disclose the nutritional characteristics of high and low resistant starch (RS) containing maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes and determined in order to identify different correlations between them. A set of 5 high and 5 low RS containing selfed maize genotypes, mostly hybrids of public as well as private sector widely grown and analyzed for the carbohydrate profile (amylose, amylopectin and starch), protein, oil, ash and crude fiber content.

Present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the single cross QPM hybrids for quantitative and quality traits. The results indicated that the hybrids showed significant variability for most of the traits studied. Among the F1 hybrids SC-8 yielded the highest grain yield per plant (170.77 g) followed by SC-30 (170.41 g), SC-24 (168.69 g) and SC20 (161.96 g). Two F1 hybrids (SC-13 and SC-19) had high tryptophan content among all the hybrids.

Maize, a nutricereal can be utilized for persons in stress if properly processed. Maize is a stable human food eaten by more than a billion people around world in a variety of whole and processed form of products. The data on the glycemic index value of different varieties of foods within India is very limited. Also effect of processing on glycemic index of food is also scanty.

Nutritional quality of maize kernel artificially infested by Sitophilus oryzae and exposed to four different CO2 concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent in modified atmosphere was studied upto six months of storage. The results revealed that exposure of kernels to 80 per cent CO2 concentration could able to maintain good per cent of carbohydrates (72.93 per cent), total proteins (8.67 per cent), crude fat (5.07 per cent) and crude fibre (2.40 per cent) upto six months of storage followed by 60 per cent CO2 concentration.

Low light is one of the most important environmental factors that determine the basic characteristics of rice growth and development. The selected twenty five adopted varieties are grown in Kharif 2016 under both normal and low light condition. The result were found that biochemical parameters such as grain starch content and total carbohydrate content (TCC) was decreased under low light condition and, nitrogen content in leaf was increased at flowering stage, protein content in grain was also affected by low light as well as grain yield and quality of rice.
