Ebook "Biotechnology in agriculture and forestry - Volume 59: Transgenic crops IV" deals with cereals, vegetables, root crops, herbs and spices. Section I is an introductory chapter on the impact of plant biotechnology in agriculture. Section II focuses on cereals (rice, wheat, maize, rye, pearl millet, barley, oats), while Section III is directed to vegetable crops (tomato, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, chickpea, common beans and cowpeas, carrot, radish).

The present investigation was carried out with fifty one genotypes of chickpea to analyze the genetic variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation and path analysis for ten quantitative traits. The study was carried out at Crop Research Centre (CRC) of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut (U.P.) during Rabi season 2017-18.

Ninty green chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes were evaluated for genetic potential, heritability, genetic advance, and traits association of yield contributing characters during 2016-2017 at ARS Kalaburgi, University of agricultural science Raichur, Karnataka, India. The experiment was carried out in augmented design; data were recorded on days to 50% flowering, pods per plant, seeds per pod, number of primary branches /plant, number of secondary branches/ plant, 100-seed weight and seed yield /plant.

Rich genetic potential with wide spectrum of genetic variability is a key factor behind a successful breeding programme. New recombinants can be generated through crossing between highly diverse parents. Genetically diverse 281 RILs and their parents were grown in randomized block design in two replications under rainfed and irrigated conditions during rabi 2011-12 and 2012-13. Categorization of RILs was done by using standard statistical procedure based on qualitative and quantitative traits. RILs were evaluated for traits name.

Although chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), an important food legume crop, is sensitive to salinity, considerable variation for salinity tolerance exists in the germplasm. To improve any existing cultivar, it is important to understand the genetic and physiological mechanisms underlying this tolerance.

(Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the important legume rabi season crop in production among the world pulse crops. The aim of the study was to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to seed yield and yield related traits in a recombinant inbred lines (RIL) derived from the cross of Fusarium wilt susceptible (JG62) and resistant (WR315). The population consisting of 125 RILs was grown under field condition over two seasons. The population were genotyped with sixty polymorphic markers and phenotyped for agronomic and yield related traits.

A study was carried out in the fields of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh during 2018-2019. Fifty one genotypes of chickpea were evaluated for means and components of variability, heritability, genetic advance and interrelationships for various parameters, direct and indirect effect of various parameters for seed yield.

The 60 elite chickpea genotypes were morphologically characterized and classified as per the guidelines for the conduct of DUS test of chickpea (Cicerarietinum L.)by the PPV&FRA, 2007, GOI. Among 13 DUS traits observed; seven traits were found tri-morphic, four traits di-morphic and two traitspolymorphic among 60 chickpea genotypes indicated the existence of remarkable amount of genetic variability that have great potential to assign distinctive morphological profiles which could be used for varietal identification and characterization.

In the present investigation total 167 non rhizobial endophytic bacterial isolates from roots of chickpea were collected and screened for qualitative P solubilization. Out of these 37 potential bacterial endophytic isolates from root were selected for further quantitative Psolubilization, Indole acetic acid (IAA), Gibberelic acid and ACC deaminase production. High P-solubilization was recorded in isolate RBR20 (20.60 mg100ml1 ). Maximum amount of IAA was produced by isolate LCRE 9 (39.60 μgml-1 ) (presence of tryptophan) and RBR164 (19.93 μgml-1 ) (absence of tryptophan).

Seed protein content did not show any significant positive correlation with seed size and test weight. Heritability estimates were quite high for almost all polygenic traits among the mutants, in comparison to the control. Cytological analysis of the mutants was almost normal, except for a few chromosomal aberrations.
