Ebook "Biotechnology in agriculture and forestry - Volume 59: Transgenic crops IV" deals with cereals, vegetables, root crops, herbs and spices. Section I is an introductory chapter on the impact of plant biotechnology in agriculture. Section II focuses on cereals (rice, wheat, maize, rye, pearl millet, barley, oats), while Section III is directed to vegetable crops (tomato, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, chickpea, common beans and cowpeas, carrot, radish).

Most agronomical traits of crop species are complex traits controlled by multiple genes and affected by environmental factors. While considerable efforts have been made to fine-map and clone major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield-related traits in rice, it is not until recently that the attention has been paid to minor QTLs.

Climate change is affecting rice production in many countries. Developing new rice varieties with heat tolerance is an essential way to sustain rice production in future global warming. We have previously reported four quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for rice spikelet fertility under high temperature at flowering stage from an IR64/N22 population.

Grain zinc and iron concentration is a complex trait that is controlled by quantitative trait loci (QTL) and is important for maintaining body health. Despite the substantial effort that has been put into identifying QTL for grain zinc and iron concentration, the integration of independent QTL is useful for understanding the genetic foundation of traits.

Soil phosphorus (P) deficiency is one of the major limiting factors to crop production. The development of crop varieties with improved P use efficiency (PUE) is an important strategy for sustainable agriculture.

Drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses that cause drastic reduction in rice grain yield (GY) in rainfed environments. The identification and introgression of QTL leading to high GY under drought have been advocated to be the preferred breeding strategy to improve drought tolerance of popular rice varieties.

In genetic analysis of agronomic traits, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that control the same phenotype are often closely linked. Furthermore, many QTLs are localized in specific genomic regions (QTL clusters) that include naturally occurring allelic variations in different genes

Interaction and genetic control for traits influencing the adaptation of the rice crop to varying environments was studied in a mapping population derived from parents (Moroberekan and Swarna) contrasting for drought tolerance, yield potential, lodging resistance, and adaptation to dry direct seeding.

Limited genetic resource in the cultivated rice may hinder further yield improvement. Some valuable genes that contribute to rice yield may be lost or lacked in the cultivated rice. Identification of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for yield-related traits such as thousand-grain weight (TGW) from wild rice speices is desired for rice yield improvement.

Heilongjiang Province is a high-quality japonica rice cultivation area in China. One in ten bowls of Chinese rice is produced here. Increasing yield is one of the main aims of rice production in this area. However, yield is a complex quantitative trait composed of many factors.

The precision "Systematic and quantitative evaluation of rice drought tolerance and construction of high throughput screening platform" identification and evaluation of rice drought resistance always is the key problem for succession of drought resistance study and breeding. We found that grain yield-related traits of rice have ecological effect with soil moisture conditions. Therefore, gradient and quantitative water controlling (GQWC) experiment was carried out in order to study the evaluation system of rice drought tolerance.

Salt stress, a major plant environmental stress, is a critical constraint for rice productivity. Dissecting the genetic loci controlling salt tolerance in rice for improving productivity, especially at the flowering stage, remains challenging.

Quantum of genetic variability and the extent to which heritable and nonheritable variations are related to the characters, determines the extent of genetic amelioration. The present investigation was carried out in kharif, 2019 to understand the clustering pattern and correlation for yield attributing traits in aromatic landraces of rice. Here 90 aromatic rice landraces along with six check varieties were evaluated for 10 quantitative characters. Cluster analysis divided these 96 rice genotypes into 4 clusters.

Rice growth is frequently affected by salinity. When exposed to high salinity, rice seed germination and seedling establishment are significantly inhibited. With the promotion of direct-seeding in Asia, improving rice seed germination under salt stress is crucial for breeding.

The sensitivity of rice to high temperature varies with growth phase, an increase in day/night temperature and genotype (Yoshida et al., 1981). Planning and execution of any breeding program for improvement on quantitative traits depends on magnitude of genetic variability.

Rice recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of Japonica x Indica cross were grown in irrigated conditions for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for yield associated traits. One hundred twenty one RIL lines were evaluated in the field environment. A total of one hundred twenty two SSR markers were used for polymorphism out of forty markers that showed parental polymorphism. Forty SSR markers were used to construct the genetic linkage map. In total, nine QTLs were identified for yield attributing traits.
