Rainwater harvesting system

One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. However, the technology has some limitations with regard to its purification system. The commonly used sand and gravel filter is very prone to clogging and its cleaning is not an easy job. At the same time, the alternative upward flow mesh filter needs further improvement in cleaning efficiency and some hassle free drain cum back washing mechanism. In upward flow mesh filter system, which creates anaerobic condition will give foul smell.

The knowledge of crop water requirement and Irrigation scheduling is an important practical consideration for designing and managing an irrigation system. A field study was conducted to find out the irrigation scheduling of Mustard crop by Climatological method and its comparison with CROPWAT model from rainwater harvested through plastic lined pond during the year 2018-19 at PFDCPET farm of the BAU Ranchi Jharkhand.

Government is supporting farmers to make a farm pond with polythene lining (to prevent percolation), install pump and sprinkler irrigation system (for efficient water utilization).

The present investigation was carried out in Dharwad Taluk (Karnataka) during 2007- 2008, to evaluate the influence of weather parameter on ground water level and the impact of Rain Water Harvesting on farming economy. Monthly data on weather parameters and ground water level recorded by District Statistical Office, Main Research Station Dharwad and Department of Mines and Geology Dharwad respectively for 28 years were collected. Primary data were collected from the randomly selected 60 sample farmers of both with and without Rain Water Harvesting Systems.

Water scarcity has many negative impacts on the environment, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, and other fresh water resources. Furthermore, water shortage makes flow management in the rehabilitation of village streams problematic. Owing to poor water resource management system and climate change India faces a persistent water shortage. Indian agriculture accounts for 90% water use due to fast track ground water depletion and poor irrigation systems. Water is a critical input into agriculture in nearly all its aspects having a determining effect on the eventual yield.

The research was conducted to assess the feasibility of the installation of a rainwater harvesting system for households facing difficulties in using tap water and groundwater for domestic purposes in a coastal area of the Vietnamese Mekong delta - the case study of the Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province. Direct household interviews and literature review were executed to comprehend the current state of domestic water consumption.
