Rare taxa

The taxa in this paper represent 8 classes, 16 orders, 20 families, 22 genera and 22 species based on the latest algal taxonomical nomenclature. Among these taxa, the existence of a rare filamentous cyanobacteria, Planktothrix compressa (Utermöhl) Anagnostidis et Komárek is described for the first time in the Philippines.

In this study, the karyomorphology of 20 Turkish Centaurea (subgenus Cyanus) taxa was examined. The number of chromosomes of 11 taxa belonging to the subgenus Cyanus was determined for the first time. As a result of the karyomorphological studies, the number of basic chromosomes was determined to be x = 8, 10, and 12 in annuals and x = 10 and 11 in perennials. The populations are tetraploid in the seven perennial taxa and polyploidy is not rare for this group. On the other hand, all annual taxa are diploid.

The question of whether bacterial species objectively exist has long divided microbiologists. A major source of contention stems from the fact that bacteria regularly engage in horizontal gene transfer (HGT), making it difficult to ascertain relatedness and draw boundaries between taxa. A natural way to define taxa is based on exclusivity of relatedness, which applies when members of a taxon are more closely related to each other than they are to any outsider. It is largely unknown whether exclusive bacterial taxa exist when averaging over the genome or are rare due to rampant hybridization.

New species of subgenus Areselonus Braet, 1999 and genus Odontosphaeropyx Cameron, 1910, viz. Chelonus (Areselonus) intermedius Long, sp. n. and Odontosphaeropyx plesius Long, sp. n. (Braconidae: Cheloninae) are described and illustrated. Additionally, these two rare taxa are newly recorded for Vietnam‟s braconid fauna. The checklist and distribution of the already known species of the genera are also provided.

Sop Cop is one of the largest remaining forest areas in the northwestern region of Vietnam. It contains high biodiversity values with previous records of many precious animal and plant species. However, biodiversity of Sop Cop is threatened by illegal activities of local people. In fact, bats and many other animal taxa in this area were poorly studied and rarely documented in previous publications. Between June 2014 and October 2016, the author conducted a variety of field surveys on bats in the Sop Cop Special Use Forest for understanding of their diversity and conservation status.

The subalpine and alpine flora of Alt›ndere Valley (Maçka, Trabzon) was investigated during 2000-2002. The study area is situated in the Colchis sector of the Euro-Siberian floristic area of the Holarctic region with regard to plant geography. In this area, 384 plant taxa belonging to 61 families and 190 genera were determined.

The precise evaluation of the conservation status of endemic and rare species is necessary in order to prevent their extinction. According to our current taxonomic revision of Turkish Salvia L., the Mediterranean and Aegean geographic regions of Turkey have 60 taxa, 32 of which are endemic (mainly local endemics), 5 of which are non-endemic rare, and the remaining 23 taxa are widely distributed.

The present study aimed to provide detailed diagnostic characters of this rare endemic species, including its morphological, anatomical, and palynological features. Moreover, the amended and expanded description, distribution, phenology, and ecology of this rare species are provided, along with its conservation status.

The chromosome numbers of C. sintenisii, C. boluënse, C. baytopae, C. poluninii, and C. ellenbergii are newly reported here. Karyotype analysis indicated that chromosomes of Cirsium taxa generally have median region (m) and rarely median point (M) and submedian region (sm) karyotypes. The findings for each of the analyzed taxa are compared with the results of previous studies.

Recently, the number of algological studies in Turkish inland waters has increased remarkably. However, taxonomic and floristic studies on algae in the Euphrates basin are still scarce. This study contributes new information to the knowledge of the Turkish freshwater algal flora.
