This paper presents an experimental study of corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) columns under eccentric compression. Three RC concrete column specimens, identical in geometry, reinforcing steel bars, and concrete mix, were fabricated. One undamaged control specimen served as the control group, while the other two column specimens underwent corrosion due to chloride ion exposure.

This paper presents a new technique to design RC columns of the rectangular section, subjected to axial compression and uni- or biaxial bending. Distributed bars around the perimeter are considered as an equivalent thin tube. Using the same steel area for two separate couples of axial compression and uniaxial bending is a trick to solve the equilibrium equations for the optimum steel ratio between faces b and h.

The paper presents experimental results and structural analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) columns made of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and natural aggregate concrete (NAC) under concentric compressive load. The ratio of recycled aggregates in mixture (i.e, replacement ratio, r in %) was 0, 50, and 100% by mass, where r = 0% corresponding to NAC.

One RC column without being strengthened is referred as the control specimen whereas two other RC columns were partially strengthened by CFRP sheets. All three RC columns were axially loaded with the same initial eccentricity e0 of 80 mm. Based on the test results such as the ultimate load-carrying capacity, the load-rotation relationship, and load-curvature at the middle of column height, the effectiveness of the strengthening technique is discussed.

This paper presents an experimental study for the structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) exterior beam–column joints rehabilitated using carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The present experimental program consists of testing 10 half-scale specimens divided into three groups covering three possible defects in addition to an adequately detailed control specimen. The considered defects include the absence of the transverse reinforcement within the joint core, insufficient bond length for the beam main reinforcement and inadequate spliced implanted column on the joint.

Beam-column joints play an important role, affecting the earthquake response of reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Their behavior is influenced by the way in which they damage the beams, columns and the complex interaction between the shear, bonding and confined mechanisms in a limited zone.

This paper addresses the strength and deformation capacity of slender columns retrofitted by externally bonded Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) subjected to seismic loading. The behaviour of RC columns depending on the CFRP confinement (carbon CFRP jacket) and on flexural reinforcement (carbon plates) was analysed by a nonlinear finite element method based on multilayer shell element and multifiber beams with plasticity and damage models.

The potential for progressive collapse of RC buildings can be estimated by column loss scenarios. The loss of either internal or external penultimate columns is among the most critical scenarios since the beam-slab substructures associated with the removed column becomes laterally unrestrained with two discontinuous edges. At large deformations, membrane behaviour of the associated slabs, consisting of a compressive ring of concrete around its perimeter and tensile membrane action in the central region, represents an important line of defence against progressive collapse.
