Reclamation options

This paper reviews treatment methods for water reclamation, acid/base regeneration from wastewater and phosphorous recovery from municipal wastewater to achieve sustainable development. The treatment options are discussed and novel treatment processes are proposed based on a literature review.

Lead (Pb) exposure is estimated to account for 0.6% of the global burden of disease with the highest burden in developing regions. Lead is considered as general protoplasmic poison, which is slow acting, cumulative and subtle. The use of leaded gasoline, discharges from industrial activities and other sources, and deposition by rainfall or dry fall can greatly influence the availability of Pb in soil, water, and other environments. Most of the Pb in plants and soil surface are anthropogenic origin.

Land contamination has been recognised as a challenge to present and future generations resulting from previous industrial and waste disposal practices. This book is a result of the authors’ desire to make sure that the risks from land contamination are effectively understood and adequately managed in a context of wise stewardship of resources. It is written for those embarking on their journey in contaminated land management – those final year undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing an option in contaminated land.
