Ebook "Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidases: Structure and function" covers current knowledge about the structure-function relationship of γ-GTs and gives information about applications of γ-GTs in different fields ranging from clinical biochemistry to biotechnology and biomedicine. Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidases (γ-GTs) are members of the N-terminal nucleophile hydrolase superfamily, enzymes that cleave the γ-glutamyl amide bond of glutathione to liberate cysteinylglycine.

The Keap1 protein (Kelch-like ECH-related protein 1) and the Nrf2 transcription factor (NF-E2- related factor 2) are important systems for maintaining homeostasis, redox, and metabolism. Based on the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway, the antioxidative mechanism of P. amarus extract (PAE) was predicted. In this paper, we evaluated the protective effects of PAE on the oxidative toxicity induced by sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in zebrafish larvae.

Heat tolerance is a key parameter that affects insect distribution and abundance. Glyphodes pyloalis Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a devastating pest of mulberry in the main mulberry-growing regions and can cause tremendous losses to sericulture by directly feeding on mulberry leaves and transmitting viruses to Bombyx mori. Moreover, G. pyloalis shows a prominent capacity for adaptation to daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations and can survive several hours under high temperature.

Salinity is one of the most aggressive environmental stresses that hamper crop productivity worldwide. Increased salt concentration in soil reduces plants ability to take up water. It also reduces nutrients availability, uptake and transport, and there distribution resulting nutritional imbalance in plant. The Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) signalling pathway is crucial to mediate cellular signalling and to maintain ion homeostasis under salinity stress. Many HKT family plasma membrane transporters play an essential role in salt tolerance mechanism by regulating Na+ and K+ transportation.

Osmotic stress is a major abiotic stress limiting crop production by affecting plant growth and development. Although previous reports discovered that methane (CH4) has a beneficial effect on osmotic stress, the corresponding downstream signal(s) is still elusive.

Plant glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) catalyzes the reduction of dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) to produce glycerol-3-phosphate (G-3-P), and plays a key role in glycerolipid metabolism as well as stress responses.

Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the antioxidants defences, in favour of the former. In recent years, the association between oxidative processes, environmental change and life histories has received much attention. Metals are important inducers of oxidative stress in aquatic organisms, promoting formation of reactive oxygen species through two mechanisms.

Antioxidant effects of twelve 3-substituted-5,5 diphenylhydantoins in concentrations of 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µM on human colon cancer cell line HCT-116 were determined 24 h after treatment. The concentrations of superoxide anion radical (O2.-), nitrites (NO2-), and total glutathione were determined spectrophotometrically.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) biosynthesized reduced glutathione (GSH), which maintains redox homeostasis in plants under normal and stressful conditions. NAC significantly increased RWC in leaves of N-untreated rice plants. In conclusion, this study suggests that NAC may enhance rice yield through modulating physiological functions of rice plants.

Glutaredoxins (Grxs) have been shown to be critical in maintaining redox homeostasis in living cells. Recently, an emerging subgroup of Grxs with one cysteine residue in the putative active motif (monothiol Grxs) has been identified.
