The main diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Egypt, causing up to 50% of yield losses. Genetic resistance is the most economic and effective means of reducing yield losses caused by the disease. However, breeding genotypes for disease resistance is a continuous process and plant breeders need to add new effective sources to their breeding materials.

Understanding the genetic basis of frost tolerance (FT) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is essential for preventing yield losses caused by frost due to cellular damage, dehydration and reduced metabolism. FT is a complex trait regulated by a number of genes and several gene families. Availability of the wheat genomic sequence opens new opportunities for exploring candidate genes diversity for FT.

Water deficit and soil salinity substantially influence plant growth and productivity. When occurring individually, plants often exhibit reduced growth resulting in yield losses. The simultaneous occurrence of these stresses enhances their negative effects. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms of combined abiotic stress responses is essential to secure crop productivity under unfavorable environmental conditions.

In India, oilseed Brassica are grown over an area of about 6.3 million hectares with an annual production of 7.92 million tones with an average yield of 1304 kg/ha whereas in Rajasthan it was still 1422kg/ha. The severe attack of many diseases not only deteriorates the quality of the seed, but also reduces the oil content considerably. Among the diseases, white rust caused by Albugo candida (Pers. Ex Hook) O. Kuntze, is an important disease of a wide variety of Brassica crops. Its infection causes disfiguring white pustules on leaves, flowers stems and pod leading to yield losses.

Paratuberculosis or Johne‟s disease is a chronic debilitating disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis. In dairy cows, paratuberculosis has been associated with production losses such as decreased milk yield, pre-mature culling, reduced carcass value etc. A possible mode of transmission for the ruminant pathogen Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis (MAP) from cattle to humans is via milk and dairy products.

Stalk rot complex of maize (Zea Mays L.) caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid and Fusarium verticilloides (Sacc) Nirenberg reduces yield directly by affecting the physiological activity of the plants and finally cause lodging, which is the main reason of economic losses. Screening of Indian maize inbreds for the resistance to pathogen was done using 34 Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers available in database.

Rice is an important food crop extensively grown in India. Several factors are responsible for reducing the yield of transplant rice. However, weed infestation is the major threat to productivity of transplanted rice. Normally the loss in yield ranges between 16-20%, yet in severe cases the yield losses can be more than 50%, depending upon the species and intensity of weeds.

Leaf spots are the most serious foliar fungal diseases of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) World wide. Early leaf spot and late leaf spots, singly or together can cause losses in pod yield of over 50% and reduce the quality of the pod and fodder. Screening of genotypes and advance breeding lines is one of the primary objective for resistance breeding in groundnut. Present investigation was carried out to screen 33 advance breeding lines and 7 released varieties of groundnut against early and late leaf spot diseases.

Early blight of potato caused by Alternaria alternata is one of the major diseases causing considerable yield loss. Efficacy of bio-agents was studied and revealed the all four Trichoderma species significantly reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen over the control by dual culture method. Significantly maximum inhibition of mycelial growth was obtained with T. viride (57.08%) followed by T. azospirillum (50.00%), T. harzianum (43.26%) and T. virens (37.08%) of the pathogen after 48 hours of incubation. In present study, T. viride was observed more inhibitory against A. alternata...

Onion has very shallow root system that is frequently irrigated and fertilized with high fertilizer dose rates to maximize yield. Converting from furrow-fertigated to microsprinkler fertigated onion production may reduce fertilizer needs. The influence of fertigation sources and their levels, applied through microsprinkler irrigation on winter onion (Allium cepa L.) was evaluated for the years 2009-2011 under semi-arid region of India.

Powdery mildew and Rust are major diseases of pea of worldwide distribution. Powdery mildew and Rust is an airborne disease. Powdery mildew is a particularly damaging in late sowing or in late maturity varieties. It is caused by Erysisphe pisi. The disease can cause 20-50% yield losses, reducing total yield biomass, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, plant height and number of nodes. The disease also affects green pea quality. Pea rust is characterized by the appearance of two types of symptoms.

Weeds are ubiquitous in nature and invade both crop and non-crop lands. When present in crop fields, weeds compete with the crops for nutrients, soil moisture, solar radiation and space; hence reduce their productivity and quality. But, they have been the most underrated crop pests despite the fact that these are weeds which cause heavy loss in crop yield rather than other pests. It has been reported that, out of total loss of agriculture production from several pests in India, weed account for about 37%, insect for 29%, diseases for 22% and other pests for 12%.

Soil erosion strongly affects crop yield, undermines the long term productivity of farm land and sustainability of farming system, and poses a major threat to the livelihood of the farmers and rural communities. The United Nations Environmental Program reported that the productivity of soil has reduced and resulting in economically unfeasible cultivation on about 20 million hectare of land each year due to soil erosion and resulting degradation of land.

Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) or Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) is a ubiquitous foliar disease of corn (maize) caused by Exserohilum turcicum, the anamorph of the ascomycete Setosphaeria. The TLB fungus survives through the winter on infected maize residue at the soil surface. As temperatures rise in the spring and early summer, the fungus produces spores on residue, and then the spores are splashed or wind-blown onto leaves of the new maize crop. Infection occurs during periods of moderate (64° to 81°F), wet and humid weather.

Drip irrigation has the greatest potential for the efficient use of water and fertilizers. The limited area of wetting under trickle irrigation reduces the active root zone and also the foraging area of plants to draw water and nutrients from the soil. For minimizing the cost of irrigation and fertilizers, adoption of drip irrigation with fertigation is essential which will maximize the nutrient uptake, while using minimum amount of water and fertilizer.

Early blight is potentially destructive disease in tomato occurring on the oldest leaves as small, brownish which are due to foliar blight disease and it was caused by a foliar fungal pathogen Alternaria solani. The disease causes considerable yield as well as post-harvest losses. A. solani produced blackish, fluffy mycelium with septate, beaked conidia on PDA Eight plant extracts and four biocontrol agents were evaluated following poison food technique and dual culture.
