This work aims at investigating the effect of aleatoric uncertainty of creep rock properties on the stability of an underground structure. This uncertainty relates to the spatial variability of the mechanical parameters representing the time-dependent behavior of geological rock formation due to the change in its mineralogy.

In this work, SrFe12O19 samples were synthesized by hydrothermal method. We systematically studied the influence of an alkaline environment (NaOH) with the molar ratio (R) of 2 , 3 and 4 on the structure, magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 particles prepared by hydrothermal method. The relation between morphology, magnetic properties and microwave absorption properties of materials have been investigated.

This history of antimicrobials is marked with impressive discoveries, the majority of which have their origin in natural products. However in this work, the antimicrobial activity of β- nitrostyrenes and related compounds of synthetic origin is reviewed and investigated with a particular focus on the influence of fluorine functionality. Various fluorinated β-methyl-β-nitrostyrene compounds were prepared, their minimum inhibition concentration in cultures of Gram positive, Gram negative and a fungus and their lipophilicity was determined.

This research thesis will explore, from the results of the life experiences of families and couples who lived through the Wangary fire (South Australia, January 2005), the complexities of work, parenting, relationships, changing responsibilities and roles and sense of place. All of these factors have relevance to the review and development of bushfire management policy and related community awareness and preparedness programs.

This is a qualitative collective case study that seeks to understand the phenomena of graffiti and its related subcultures. By employing Interpretivist techniques, the research attempts to raise questions about harm minimisation, zero tolerance and graffiti, as well as broaden the debate about these distinct policy approaches for local communities. The research setting encompasses the geographic area of the Knox municipality, situated in outer eastern Melbourne.

This research project investigates the relationship between music composition, particularly electronic pop, and sound design (the editing/mixing of sound for cinema), with its main focus on Multi-channel (Surround Sound) techniques. It proposes new practices that extend music compositional tools into embracing spatial techniques employed by sound design. My research encompasses both the conceptual development (ie spatial techniques in creating narratives) and the practical issues relating to the production and technology needed for such works.

The aim of this thesis is to extend understanding of how Australian Indigenous and Nonindigenous art markets are both similar and distinct from one another. Aside from the obvious difference in relation to the categorisation of the types of art works that each sub-market encompasses which is explored in the next section of this chapter, this thesis considers the operation of the market mechanism to determine the auction price in Indigenous and Nonindigenous art markets as well as the overall Australian art market.

With process and materiality as subject and content, this project works through the changing and intertextual nature of contemporaneous meaning making under late-capitalism. The project makes use of common wooden materials such as pine, MDF, and plywood to support an object- and installation-based practice. Through the social relations of materiality and visibility of process, the physical outcomes promote the multiplicities of our intertextual contemporaneity while maintaining a physical grounding in the reality of everyday lived experiences.

The organisation of the thesis will follow a seven-chapter structure. The researcher will use the term thesis as used by Perry (1994) to describe the entire work, while the related terms research and study will be used interchangeably when referring to the research undertaken in the thesis. This thesis could make a significant contribution to the social control literature by addressing these shortcomings and identifying and examining the formal and informal mechanisms used conjointly by the government and its agencies to control social security expenditures and also social outcomes.

This project examines how the moving image can be used as a vehicle of memory, to express what is lost, what is gained and what changes occur in relation to personal family migratory history—a messy and ambiguous process. This practice-led research project investigates video work, using filmed materials and objects, to focus attention on the non-linear aspect of time as it is subjected to individual and collective memories. The outcomes highlight the sometimes disconnecting and unpredictable experiences of migration, storytelling, and memory.

This research is the story of my transition to a relational design practice and how sharing the design process, through a participatory design approach, changed it. The driving force behind this research was my desire to be able to work in partnership with people to facilitate positive change in their quality of life.

Objects, when understood as retrieval cues for memories, may elicit psychological benefits and connections to an individual's past. They are integral to our life story and help to form our individual sense of identity and ability to establish a sound psychological foundation. Transitional objects are an important related category of objects that have been identified in this research. The concept and use of transitional objects and their related phenomena during infancy is well researched, whereas the impact and importance beyond infancy is less established.

The primary aim of this study is to determine the extent to which external auditors, in exercising their responsibilities under the Australian Auditing Standards, conduct additional audit work (proxied by audit fees) when audit clients have experienced known misappropriation of assets (MOA) fraud. The research is motivated by three key factors. The first being the mounting concerns by the Australian government and others in relation to audit quality.

This study was experimental in nature and the research was based on a quantitative approach tailored to minimize threats to validity through the use of a control group. Additionally, it involved elements of related qualitative research to interpret findings. An empirically-based, working hypothesis was presented to the effect that, a greater potential of project success can be realized by introducing information on emotional development to enhance behavioral competencies of all project team members.

The thesis consists of five chapters which aim to investigate the mechanical properties and fabricating processes of different biomedical Ti scaffolds, with the structure presented: Chapter 1 is a generalized introduction to the content of the thesis, including the background, scopes and objectives of the research. In Chapter 2, a comprehensive literature review is presented. Chapter 3 presents the design and fabrication of the Ti scaffolds. In Chapter 4, the mechanical properties of the fabricated Ti scaffolds were analyzed.
