Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly prevalent among Indigenous Australians, especially those in remote regions. The Tiwi population has been isolated from mainland Australia for millennia and exhibits unique genetic characteristics that distinguish them from other Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.

Ebook "The history of allelopathy" had its beginnings about thirty-five years ago, when I migrated to Australia from Canada, and began a doctoral study concerning the role of allelopathy in forests of the eucalypt known in Australia as mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans), under the supervision of Dr Kingsley Rowan and the late Dr David Ashton. In first assembling materials for the usual survey of the relevant literature, I came to realise that the relative youth of Australia as a nation and its geographical remoteness were to be barriers in fully dealing with historical concepts.

This study has explored the impact of the community integration of ATDs (Australian Trained Doctors) and OTDs (Overseas Trained Doctors) in rural and remote communities on their quality of life (QOL) and its resultant effect on their retention by developing a model of research linking QOL as the intervening variable between community integration (the independent variable) and retention (the dependent variable). A national survey of 279 rural and remote GPs was conducted between September and December 2010.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonorrhoea, the second most commonly notified sexually transmitted infection in Australia. One of the highest notification rates of gonorrhoea is found in the remote regions of Western Australia (WA). Unlike isolates from the major Australian population centres, the remote community isolates have low rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

To explore the impact of geographical remoteness and area-level socioeconomic disadvantage on colorectal cancer (CRC) survival. Methods: Multilevel logistic regression and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations were used to analyze geographical variations in five-year all-cause and CRC-specific survival across 478 regions in Queensland Australia for 22,727 CRC cases aged 20–84 years diagnosed from 1997–2007.

Cancer is a leading burden of disease in Australia and worldwide, with incidence rates varying with age, sex and geographic location. As part of the Ageing, Chronic Disease and Injury study, we aimed to map the incidence rates of primary cancer diagnoses across western Victoria and investigate the association of age, accessibility/remoteness index of Australia (ARIA) and area-level socioeconomic status (SES) with cancer incidence.

Australia is a wealthy developed country. However, there are significant disparities in health outcomes for Aboriginal infants compared with other Australian infants. Health outcomes tend to be worse for those living in remote areas.

The Lililwan Project is the first population-based study to determine Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) prevalence in Australia and was conducted in the remote Fitzroy Valley in North Western Australia. The diagnostic process for FASD requires accurate assessment of gross and fine motor functioning using standardised cut-offs for impairment.

Most Australian Aboriginal children are on track with their development, however, the prevalence of children at risk of or with a developmental or behavioural problem is higher than in other children. Aboriginal child development data mostly comes from remote communities, whereas most Aboriginal children live in urban settings.

In Australia the health outcomes of remote dwelling Aboriginal infants are comparable to infants in developing countries. This research investigates service quality, from the clinicians’ perspective and as observed and recorded by the researcher, in two large Aboriginal communities in the Top End of northern Australia following health system changes.

In the Fitzroy Valley 70.0% of children were hospitalised at least once before age 7 years and over one third of admissions were in infants. Infections were the most common reason for admission in all age groups but comorbidities were common and may contribute to need for admission.

The global environment that charac- terises the business world highlights the importance of developing strate- gies that go beyond the geographical boundaries of one country. Wage-rate differentials, expanding foreign mar- kets and improved transportation break down barriers of time and space between countries and force the logistics function to take on a global dimension. Global logistics is the response to the increasing integration of international markets as firms try to remain competitive.

In Australia and New Zealand, there are three levels of nurse: Enrolled Nurse (EN), Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP), an RN with advanced education and training. Nursing and midwifery qualifications are recognized between the two nations under the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement. Nurses and midwives represent around 50% of Australia’s health workforce, though the availability of clinicians varies greatly in urban and remote areas. New Zealand has a total nursing workforce of approximately 40,000 practicing nurses and nurse assistants.

Satellites have already been accepted as an effective medium for the communication of education and health services. For example, The Rural Health Education Foundation of Australia broadcasts distance education programs using digital satellite technology, the Internet including live webcasting, “enduring” materials (DVDs), other television services and new technologies as they become available. The Foundation operates a continually expanding network of more than 660 satellite receiving sites throughout rural and remote Australia, called the Rural Health Satellite Network.
