Ebook "An introduction to the physical chemistry of food" introduces the physical chemistry essential to understanding the behavior of foods. Starting with the simplest model of molecules attracting and repelling one another while being moved by the randomizing effect of heat, the laws of thermodynamics are used to derive important properties of foods such as flavor binding and water activity.

Hypoxia is pervasive in cancer and other diseases. Cells sense and adapt to hypoxia by activating hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIFs), but it is still an outstanding question why cell types differ in their transcriptional response to hypoxia.

The major component of Eucalyptus globulus is 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol) and has been recognized as a high ovipositional repellent and mild mosquito feeding repellent [8]. Chemical instability, volatility, propensity for oxidation and poor water solubility of essential oils make them inconvenient for extensive use [9]. Cymbopogon winterianus, commonly known as citronella, is native to the tropical and subtropical areas, consisting of citronellol, citronellal, and geraniol as its major compounds [10]. Cymbopogon oil has been proven to exhibit low acute toxicity in laboratory animals [11].

The insecticidal and repellent activities were observed by residual film method and surface film application methods respectively. Leaf, stem and root of Mimosa pudica L. were screened through Petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts against flat grain beetle, Cryptolestes pusillus (Schon.).

The essential oil extracted from the dried flower buds of cloves is used for acne, warts, scars and parasites. Research has shown that clove oil is an effective mosquito repellent (Trongtokit et al., 2005). Culinary spices and herbs contain a wide variety of active phytochemicals including flavonoids, terpenes, polyphenols, curcumins, coumarins (Fabio et al., 2003). The aim of this research is to determine the phytochemical constituents and antimicrobial effect of Syzygium aromaticum oil and crude extract.

Role of vermicompost in nourishing agricultural crops has attracted the attention of researchers throughout the globe in past few decades. Vermicompost is the method of using earthworms to transform organic waste into nutrient rich compost. The earthworms’ casting is nutritive organic manure rich in humus, NPK, micronutrients, beneficial microbes, antibiotics, enzymes, growth hormones, etc. There are many reports in literature showing beneficial effects of imbedding vermicompost in soil.

A study was conducted to evaluate the repellent activity of Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) against Red rust flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica). The ethanolic concentrations of oil at 1%, 2% and 3% were tested against two stored product beetles and the readings were taken for 2 hours at half an hour interval. It was found that repellent activity was proportional to the concentration and higher concentration has stronger effect. Moreover the repellent effect was better on T. castaneum as compared to R. dominica. T. castaneum showed 88.31, 95.
