Resistance gene deployment
-
Resistant cultivars are key elements for pathogen control and pesticide reduction, but their repeated use may lead to the emergence of virulent pathogen populations, able to overcome the resistance.

The spread of stem rust race Ug99 and variants are threat to worldwide wheat production and efforts are being made to identify and incorporate resistance. A primary source of concern at present is that Ug99 (TTKSK and its variants TTKST and TTTSK) has overcome major sources of stem rust resistance genes e.g. Sr31, Sr38 and other important gene complexes which confer resistance to stem rust. Deployment of cultivars with broad spectrum rust resistance is the only environmentally viable option to combat these diseases.

Plants in nature are constantly exposed to a variety of abiotic and biotic stresses which limits their growth and production. Enhancing crop yield and production to feed exponentially growing global population in a sustainable manner by reduced chemical fertilization and agrochemicals will be a big challenge. Recently, the targeted application of beneficial plant microbiome and their cocktails to counteract abiotic and biotic stress is gaining momentum and becomes an exciting frontier of research.

The adult plant stem rust resistance gene Sr2 was introgressed into hexaploid wheat cultivar (cv) Marquis from tetraploid emmer wheat cv Yaroslav, to generate stem rust resistant cv Hope in the 1920s. Subsequently, Sr2 has been widely deployed and has provided durable partial resistance to all known races of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici.

Rice (Oryza sativa) plays a significant role in global food security. Various biotic and abiotic stresses limit rice production. Among the various biotic stress, rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryza is one of the most ruinous disease in all rice growing regions of the world. Use of resistant genes and quantitative resistance conferred by quantitative trait loci (QTLs) is the best option for management of blast.

Scab caused by Venturia inaequalis (Cke.) Wint. is the most important fungal disease of apple. The development and deployment of genetic resistance is reliable and a safe option to combat the dreaded disease with palpable advantage as compared to chemical control. A variety Firdous developed by SKUAST-K has been known for its resistance, however, genetic basis of resistance has not been proved or established till date.

Late leaf spot caused by Phaeoisariopsis personata is the most important disease on groundnut worldwide. Although fungicide treatment is effective, it is uneconomical to use because of high cost, hazardous to environment and insensitivity build up in pathogen. The deployment of resistant cultivars is a better option to control LLS disease in groundnut the investigation was undertaken to determine the mode of genetic inheritance of LLS resistance in two F2 and F3 segregating populations of groundnut.

One of the major constraints to crop production is the biotic stress which is being caused by various fungi, bacteria and viruses. Successful management of plant disease is mainly dependent on the accurate and efficient detection of plant pathogens, amount of genetic and pathogenic variability present in pathogen population, development of resistant cultivars and deploying of effective resistance gene in different epidemiological region.

Bacterial leaf blight (BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is a destructive disease in rice fields. Can Tho is one of the most important rice-growing areas in the Mekong Delta, which is vulnerable to climate change, making the disease more damaging in this region. Deployment of resistance genes is considered an economic and eco-friendly approach to control the disease. However, Xoo exists in different races with diverse reactions on different resistance genes.
