  • ‘Mutiara’ guava fruit is one of two leading guava cultivars sold in Indonesian markets. Its thin skin and climacteric-typed respiration shorten its shelf-life due to high transpiration and respiration rates. Eventhough 2.5% chitosan was proven to lengthen its shelf-life, the effect of ethylene trapped under chitosan coating needs to be blocked in order to increase its coating affectivity.

  • This study proposed a breathing rate monitoring strategy using a mono camera to track and detect sleep apnea phenomena. Breathing rates were first tracked among consecutive image frames. The human body area was then isolated and magnified using a deep neural network (DNN) model before applying the optical flow algorithm to extract and monitor the up and down changes caused by respiration.

  • The commercialization of mushrooms is critical because they have a short shelf life. For this reason, we investigated the effect of agar-agar and egg white protein on weight loss, polyphenol oxidase and catalase, protein content, total phenolics, total antioxidant capacity, respiration rate, ethylene production and storability of button mushrooms. Our findings suggested that the treatment of edible coating delayed remarkably senescence and maintained the quality of button mushroom.

  • The research aimed to assess the effects of methyl jasmonate (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mM MeJA) on weight loss and phytochemical compounds of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. ‘Hayward’) throughout the cold storage and shelf life. Kiwifruits were stored at 0 ± 0.5°C and 90 ± 5% RH for 180 days, and at 20 ± 1.0°C and 80 ± 5% RH for 5 days in shelf life conditions. During cold storage, weight loss was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in 0.25 and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments than those of control and 0.5 mM MeJA treatments. The highest flesh firmness was determined in MeJA-treated fruits.

  • Temperature and grain moisture content are the main factors affecting grain spoilage in storage. These factors have a significant impact on the maintenance of quality, insect, fungus, and pest development. The main objective of this study was to determine the CO2 concentration and respiration rate of hulled einkorn wheat in different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) and grain moisture contents (9.1%, 11.5%, 13.8%, and 15.9%, wet basis) by means of CO2 sensors.

  • Field bean also known as Dolichos lablab beans is one of the important legume crops grown widely in Southern Karnataka. It is rich in carbohydrate, protein, fat, and crude fiber. Fresh beans are a favoured vegetable of the people of this region. But, its availability is being seasonal, attempts are made to preserve its freshness for longer periods. The storage life of vegetables and fruits depends on their respiration rates.

  • Respiration rate, sensory attributes, change in color, physiological loss in weight, chlorophyll and beta - carotene content and microbial loads were determined during storage of mint leaves at 10 and 27ᵒC to find an optimal gas composition to extend the shelf life. The Low Density Poly Ethylene (LDPE) bags with a thickness of 152 µ which recorded the lowest permeability to oxygen (1067 ml/m2 /day) was selected and used for packaging mint leaves.

  • One of the largest sinks of organic carbon on the global scale is the organic matter stored in soils, it contains about 1500 Gt C in the top one meter. Changes in the size and the turnover rate of the soil carbon pools could possibly have an effect on the atmospheric CO2 concentration and the global climate. Stabilization of soil organic C (SOC) is pre-requisite for long-term C sequestration to mitigate climate change. Stabilization of SOC means the decrease in the potential loss of organic C by microbial respiration, erosion or leaching.

  • Skin infections are most common in dogs, especially pugs are more prone due to its folded skin nature. A Pug of 3 years age weighing around 10 kgwas brought to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad with the complaint of alopecia, pruritus, decrease in the appetite and erythematous lesions all over the body. Detailed clinical examination revealed mild increase in temperature (102.50 F) and normal heart rate, pulse and respirations. Skin scrapings and bacterial cultural examination revealed mixed infection of Demodicosis and Staphylococcal pyoderma.

  • The effect of time and temperature on the respiration rate (RR) of fresh-cut produce is critical towards the development of a suitable modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system. This requires an adequate mathematical model for prediction of RR as a function of both time and temperature. This study investigated the effect of temperature (5, 10 and 15 °C) and storage time of 1 to 5 days on the RR (RO2 and RCO2) of two pomegranate cultivars (cv. „Bhagwa‟ and„Ganesh‟) fresh arils. RO2 and RCO2 were within the range of 2.54 to 8.36 ml/kg.h and 2.76 to 10.04 ml/kg.

  • Sapota (Achras zapota L.) is one of the tropical climacteric fruits preferred by the consumers due to its sweet taste and aroma. Fruits become ripe very quickly after harvesting due to sudden climacteric rise with high respiration rate and ethylene production. This quick ripening causes loosening the texture of fruit leads to softening of and spoilage. The short shelf life of the fruit is a marketing problem which is a major cause of huge postharvest loss of this fruit.

After storage, fruits were transferred to ambient conditions (20±2oC) for 3 days shelf life stimulation period and then observations were recorded up to 12+3 days. Results revealed that fruits treated with SA or SSA at 2 mM concentration showed minimum weight loss and colour change but maintained maximum firmness, total phenolics and ascorbic acid content.
