Ebook "Stem cells in the respiratory system" focuses on reviewing the most relevant—and recent—ideas on using local, endogenous, and exogenous progenitor/stem cells in preventing and treating injury to the lung. The lungs are one of the most complex organs in the human body, with a mature adult lung boasting at least 40 morphologically differentiated cell lineages.

Respiratory illness caused by viral infection is associated with the development and exacerbation of childhood asthma. Little is known about the effects of respiratory viral infections in the absence of illness. Using quantitative PCR (qPCR) for common respiratory viruses and for two genes known to be highly upregulated in viral infections (CCL8/CXCL11), we screened 92 asthmatic and 69 healthy children without illness for respiratory virus infections.

The epithelium is the first line of defense against pathogens. Notably the epithelial cells lining the respiratory track are crucial in sensing airborne microbes and mounting an effective immune response via the expression of target genes such as cytokines and chemokines.

As a main line of defense of the respiratory tract, the airway epithelium plays an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. CDHR3 and EMSY were reported to be expressed in the human airway epithelium. Although previous genome-wide association studies found that the two genes were associated with asthma susceptibility, similar observations have not been made in the Chinese Han population.

Hypovitaminosis A disturbs the normal function of skin or organs most frequently by blocking fluid flow through ducts that lead to mucosal hyperplasia and loss of ciliated epithelium which triggers an invasion of an opportunistic pathogen like mycoplasma and infiltration of lymphocytes and histiocytes (Jacobson et al., 1991). The lesions slough large amounts of epithelial and inflammatory cells, which create the nasal discharge and over time that obstructs the nasal sinus (Wendland et al., 2006).

Targeted delivery of gene therapy vectors to the mouse respiratory tract is often performed via intranasal or intratracheal administration; however, there can be a great deal of variability between these methods, which could potentially influence experimental results.

NO is a gaseous molecule, synthesized by NO synthase (NOS), an enzyme that catalyses the oxidation of L-arginine to NO and L-citrulline. At least two types of NOS can be reported, constitutive NOS (cNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS) (168) . cNOS is produced by many cells in the upper and lower respiratory system, such as parasympathetic vasodilator nerves, endothelial cells and ciliated mucosa cells (169) .

Dicalcin (renamed from p26olf) is a dimer form of S100 proteins found in frog olfactory epithelium. S100 proteins form a group of EF-hand Ca 2+ -binding proteins, and are known to interact with many kinds of tar-get protein to modify their activities. To determine the role of dicalcin in the olfactory epithelium, we identified its binding proteins.

Distribution in the Body proceeds rapidly, because the absorbing surface is greatly enlarged due to the formation of the epithelial brush border (submicroscopic foldings of the plasmalemma). The absorbability of a drug is characterized by the absorption quotient, that is, the amount absorbed divided by the amount in the gut available for absorption. In the respiratory tract, cilia-bearing epithelial cells are also joined on the luminal side by zonulae occludentes, so that the bronchial space and the interstitium are separated by a continuous phospholipid barrier.
