The incidence of hypervirulent epidemic Clostridium difficile has increased around the world and now in Australia. Assays that are capable of rapidly identifying these strains would enable earlier diagnosis and timely infection control response. The aims of the first part of the study were to validate and develop a molecular technique for the rapid diagnosis of toxigenic C.

Whilst the level of CQ and the factors that influence CQ have been investigated among business students, it has not been applied to the academics responsible for their education. In the context of CQ, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the capacity or preparedness of university academics to deal with the increasing phenomenon of multiculturalism in the classroom. This research addressed this gap through an examination of the level of CQ exhibited by Australian accounting academics.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is one of the most popular forms of IT for businesses at present. Deriving from efforts to rationalize lead times and possession stock costs, the 80’s manufacturing resource planning (MRP II) is developed into ERP system considered as the standard that integrates business processes throughout the organization, which in turn enhances operational efficiency (Akkermans, Bogerd, Yücesan, & Van Wassenhove, 2003; Davenport, 1998). Callaway (1999) states that the ERP system promises to achieve benefits in both tangible (e.g.

Regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins modulate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling networks by terminating signals produced by active Gα subunits. RGS17, a member of the RZ subfamily of RGS proteins, is typically only expressed in appreciable amounts in the human central nervous system, but previous works have shown that RGS17 expression is selectively upregulated in a number of malignancies, including lung, breast, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Duodenase is a 29-kDa serine endopeptidase that displays selective trypsin- and chymotrypsin-like substrate specificity. This enzyme has been localized to epitheliocytes of Brunner’s glands, and as described here, to mast cells within the intestinal mucosa and lungworm-infected lung, implying an important additional role in inflammation and tissue remodelling. In primary cultures of pulmonary artery fibroblasts, duodenase induced a concentration-dependent increase in [3H]thymidine incorporation with a maximal effect observed at 30 nM.

Obesity is a central feature of the metabolic syndrome and is associated with increased risk for insulin resistance and type II diabetes. Here, we investigated the contribution of human apoliprotein E3 and mouse apoli-protein E to the development of diet-induced obesity in response to western-type diet. Our data show that apolipoprotein E contributes to the development of obesity and other related metabolic disorders, and that human apolipoprotein E3 is more potent than mouse apolipoprotein E in promoting obesity in response to western-type diet. ...

Mistletoe extracts have immunomodulatory activity. We show that nontoxic concentrations ofViscumalbumextracts increase natural killer (NK) cell-mediated killing of tumor cells but spare nontarget cells from NK lysis. The com-pounds responsible for this bioactivity were isolated from mistletoe and characterized. They have low molecular mass and are thermostable and protease-resistant.

Patients with diabetes mellitus suffer from an increased incidence of complications including cardiovascular disease and cataracts; the mechanisms responsible for this are not fully understood. One characteristic of such complications is an accumulation of advanced glycation end-products formed by the adduction of glucose or species derived from glucose, such as low-molecular mass aldehydes, to proteins.

The Goodpasture antigen-binding protein, GPBP, is a serine⁄threonine kinase whose relative expression increases in autoimmune processes. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in auto-immune pathogenesis. Here we show that COL4A3BP, the gene encoding GPBP, maps head-to-head withPOLK, the gene encoding for DNA polymerase kappa (polj), and shares with it a 140-bp promoter containing a Sp1 site, a TATA-like element, and a nuclear factor kappa B (NFjB)-like site

Rat hearts were perfused for 1 h with 5 mMglucose with or without palmitate or oleate at concentrations characteristic of the fasting state. The inclusion of fatty acids resulted in increased activities of the a-1 or thea-2 isoforms of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), increased phosphoryla-tion of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and a decrease in the tissue content of malonyl-CoA. Activation of AMPK was not accompanied by any changes in the tissue contents of ATP, ADP, AMP, phosphocreatine or creatine. ...

Adecrease in the level ofO-acetylatedsialicacidsobserved in colorectal carcinoma may lead to an increase in the expres-sion of sialyl Lewis X , a tumor-associated antigen, which is related toprogressionof colorectal cancer tometastasis. The underlyingmechanism for this reduction is, however, not fully understood. Two enzymes are thought to be primarily responsible for the turnover of O-acetyl ester groups on sialic acids; sialate-O-acetyltransferase (OAT) and sialate-O-acetylesterase (OAE).

Multisite protein phosphorylation is a common regulatory mechanism in cell signaling, and dramatically increases the possibilities for protein– protein interactions, conformational regulation, and phosphorylation path-ways. However, there is at present no comprehensive picture of how these factors shape the response of a protein’s phosphorylation state to changes in kinase and phosphatase activities.

Lipopolysaccharide is a major constituent of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. It activates monocytes and macrophages to produce cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-aand interleukins IL-1b and IL-6. These cytokines appear to be responsible for the neurotoxicity observed in peripheral nervous system inflammatory disease.

Extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) have been shown to be acti-vated by opioids and functionally linked to addiction. Morphine-associated changes in ERK activity seem to be the characteristic features of opioid action. In this study, we observed a rapid and severe increase in ERK1⁄2 activity after a 5 min morphine treatment of HEK-MOR cells (transfected with the ratl-opioid receptor MOR1) expressing l-opioid receptor.

The paper by S. Boronatet al. [1] contains errors on page 3331. The corrected sentence and corrected Figure 6 appear below: By contrast, the rainbow trout liver (RTL) cell line showed an EC50 for BNF of 6.1 ± 3.7 nm. These values increased to 53.4 ± 31.2 nmwhen the dose–response curve was performed in the presence of 200lmcarbaryl, indicating an antagonistic effect in these cells similar to the one observed for the yeast YCM-RYA system (Fig. 6; compare with Fig. 3).

Increasing Quality and Equity in Education: The Case of Chile The actual and counterfactual distributions of school averages are nearly identical. If the counterfactual reflects a substantial increase in sorting on school effectiveness, it must be that effectiveness is responsible for a very small share of the across-school variation in SAT scores.
