Restricted irrigation

The present investigation entitled “Performance of wheat varieties under restricted irrigation” was conducted during Rabi season of 2019-20at university research farm Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Bihar, India to find out the effect of restricted irrigation on yield and yield attributes of different wheat varieties. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replication.

The coastal belt of Odisha extends over 480 kilometers from mouth of Subarnarekha river in the north to the Chilika lake in the south. The plain occupies the outfall regions of major rivers like Mahanadi, Bramhani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha and Rusikulya. It covers one of the most fertile land in the eastern parts of the country and support the major food grain production in the state. But due to the proximity of sea, cyclonic hazard and saltwater ingress through tidal channels have restricted the availability of acceptable quality of water for irrigation as well as drinking.

Wheat genotypes were shown under restricted irrigated condition, based on morphological traits and their genetic variability, correlation coefficient analysis, path coefficient analysis and rank germplasm based on principal component analysis for yield and yield attributing traits. An experiment was carried out in eastern sub-Himalayan plains of India to assess the performances of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under various crop establishment techniques and to find out the influence of mulching and irrigation on productivity, moisture use and profitability of wheat cultivation. Results indicated the superiority of bed planting (BP) in terms of biomass production and grain yield over zero tillage (ZT) and conventional tillage (CT). Significantly higher biomass was recorded under bed planting (BP) over that under conventional tillage (CT) and zero tillage (ZT).

An attempt was made to screen forty native AM fungal isolates from the soybean rhizosphere of Belagavi and Dharwad districts based on their peroxidise activity and total dry matter accumulation in soybean under the restricted water regime of -500 kPa. Top three fungal isolates viz., UASDAMFS15, UASDAMFS25 and UASDAMFS36 tentatively identified as G. maculosum, G. manihotis and G. globiferum respectively. For pot culture studies three irrigation regimes were maintained viz., -33 kPa -500 kPa and -1000 kPa. An experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with factorial concept.

Alexandria port is the main Egyptian port at the Mediterranean Sea. It is connected to the Nile River through Nubaria canal, which is a main irrigation canal. The canal was designed to irrigate eight hundred thousand acres of agricultural lands, along its course which extends 100 km. The canal has three barrages and four locks to control the flow and allow light navigation by some small barges. Recently, it was decided to improve the locks located on the canal. More than 40 million US$ was invested in these projects.

Moisture deficiencies occurring early in the crop cycle may delay the maturity season and reduce yields. Shortages later in the season often lower quality, as well as yields. However, irrigation surplus, especially late in the season, can reduce both the quality and the post-harvest life of the crop. Uneven or surplus irrigation, above the amount required to replace evapotranspiration, causes nitrate leaching below the root system and the ability of the crop to recover from the nitrogen deficiency decreases.

Variation in precipitation will also affect the salinity levels of surface water. Increased rainfall or runoff will likely reduce salinity levels, especially in winter, while lower precipitation levels and higher temperatures during summertime could increase salinity levels (Jacobs et al. 2001). As a result, semi- arid regions that suffer from decreasing runoff will be greatly impacted by salinization (Jacobs et al. 2001).
