To estimate the national cost of ADEs resulting from inappropriate medication-related alert overrides in the U.S. inpatient setting. Materials and Methods: We used three different regression models (Basic, Model 1, Model 2) with model inputs taken from the medical literature. A random sample of 40 990 adult inpatients at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston with a total of 1 639 294 medication orders was taken.

Ketamine is a commonly used clinical anesthetic and a popular recreational drug. However, with the exception of studies about the nervous system, studies about the effect of early ketamine exposure on embryos are rare. Xenopus laevis is a commonly used vertebrate model for assessing teratogenicity.

The use of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in population of older adults may result in adverse drug events (ADE) already after short term exposure, especially when it is prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In order to limit ADE in the treatment of older adults PIM lists have been constructed as a source of information for healthcare professionals.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) and Z-drugs have high potential for developing frequent adverse drug events in older adults (e.g., psychomotor sedation, drug-related dementia, deliria, drug dependence, etc.). Knowledge of the prevalence and patterns of the use of BZDs/Z-drugs in vulnerable older patients is important in order to prevent and reduce the burden caused by their drug-related complications.

Modafinil is a drug used in the treatment of narcolepsy, approved by the FDA in 1998. In previous studies, modafinil was easily synthesized through three stages, in the Bunte salt medium, the overall yield of 74,56 %. The quality of the modafinil was evaluated following USP 41. The results have shown that the synthesized modafinil satisfied quality requirements in pharmacopoeia.

In humans, the drug metabolizing enzyme CYP2D6 is highly polymorphic resulting in substantial differences in the metabolism of drugs including anti-arrhythmics, neuroleptics, and opioids. The objective of this study was to phenotype a population of 100 horses from five different breeds and assess differences in the metabolic activity of the equine CYP2D6 homolog using codeine as a probe drug.

In the study, antibacterial film synthesis was aimed using sol-gel technique from POSS structure with various functional groups. For this purpose, antibacterial properties have been acquired by metronidazole to the films to be synthesized. The films obtained were coated on glass surface samples by dip coating method. Antibacterial activities of surface coated glass samples were observed in E.coli and S. aureus bacteria. Metronidazole release studies in the film samples were followed by UV spectrophotometer. It was observed that drug release reached 68.90% at the end of the 24th h.

This combination of paclitaxel and curcumin gave a higher efficiency of both drugs in cytotoxicity, induced apoptosis, and effect on cell cycles of KPL4 cell line in comparison with the use of paclitaxel or curcumin alone or even a normal mixture of these two compounds. Furthermore, PTX-Cur/PLA-TPGS nanoparticles exhibited a powerful ability in preventing MCF7 spheroids growth. Interestingly, curcumin also functioned as both a drug and a label. Based on the autofluorescence of curcumin, the absorption of PTX-Cur/PLA-TPGS nanoparticles into MCF7 spheroids could be followed and calculated.

Novel 1-substituted 3-(p-isopropylphenyl)-5-phenylformazans (3a–g) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and FT-IR techniques and UV-visible spectroscopy. Antiproliferative activities of 3a–g against HeLa and C6 cells were determined using the BrdU cell proliferation ELISA assay. 5-Florouracil was used as the positive control. The effects of substituents (–H, –CH3, and –I) and their positions (ortho, meta, and para) on the antiproliferative activities were evaluated.

In this research, a new series of (E) -3-(4-substitutedphenyl)-1-(4’-morpholinophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one derivatives 1–7 was synthesized, aiming to develop effective antiproliferative agents. The antiproliferative activities of compounds 1–7 were examined against HeLa and C6 cell lines at eight different concentrations using the BrdU ELISA assay. The activity results were compared with reference anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Compound 1 had almost the same antiproliferative activity as 5-FU.

The significant development in the construction of microscale cell culture platforms and the interest in bioanalytical analysis have recently resulted in the emergence of a new concept of ‘organ-on-a-chip’ systems. Organon-a-chip is a new three-dimensional (3D) in vitro microfabricated unit that contains a multichannel microfluidic cell culture. Even if many informative and useful data are obtained from animal models and in vitro assays, they are still limited for extrapolation to human systems during drug design and development.

Liquid–liquid extraction of Au(III) from aqueous sodium malonate medium using 2-octylaminopyridine (2-OAP) as an extractant in xylene was achieved. The current work explored the influence of several experimental parameters such as pH, weak acid concentration, extractant concentration, equilibrium time, stripping agents, and aqueous:organic volume ratio on the extraction of Au(III). The experimental results showed that the Au(III) was quantitatively extracted to about 99.5% by 0.05 M 2-OAP in 0.05 M malonate at 5.0 pH.
