A retaining wall constructed on expansive soil can be subjected to lateral swelling pressures due to soil swelling, which may cause a significant horizontal deformation and bending of the retaining wall. In Australia, it is generally assumed that the backfill behind a retaining wall is non-expansive material. Therefore lateral swelling pressures induced by expansive soils are ignored in routine design.

The research shows that the main problem to be solved is the deformation of the foundation pit, and the deformation of side wall of foundation pit tunnel is the most obvious. The maximum deformation of the side wall of the main tunnel and the auxiliary tunnel reached the maximum at 15 m. The maximum deformation of the main tunnel is about 1.3 cm, and that of the auxiliary tunnel is about 0.9 cm.

Concrete has been in use as a primary building material since Roman times. As it is strong in compression but weak in tension, it was used in arches, vaults and walls where it is stressed principally in compression. In the mid-nineteenth century, it was discovered that iron and later steel bars could be embedded in the concrete, effectively giving it tensile strength. This allowed it to be used in beams and slabs, where it worked in bending. Buildings, bridges, retaining walls and many other structures were made in this reinforced concrete.
