Rice and SRI

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the staple food and being the most important ingredient of the food basket for most nations in Asia. The declining productivity of rice and its availability of per capita is therefore a policy concern. Nevertheless, the production of rice in Malaysia is primarily implemented by adopting the conventional technique. This technique has increased the production cost of rice and became a constraint to achieving the production potential for the farmer.

The fertilizer adjustment equations evolved during previous season for the Swarna variety of rice was tested and fertilizer application with organic source (FYM). It was also noticed that fertilizer dose applied based on STCR prescription derived previously to achieve a definite yield target could not be obtained. This may be due to differences in various input use efficiency, nutritional requirement.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is world’s most widely cultivated food grain crop. At initial decades of 21st century, one probability of a great famine appeared in the world due to long drought in tropics and subtropics and at the same time it appeared more dangerously because of the climate change threat. System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) which is somewhat based on the fundamental principles of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a new wheat cultivation technique which might act as a significantly new weapon as a part of climate-smart farming.

Performance evaluation of commercially available rice transplanters to assess the suitability to SRI
SRI method of planting requires planting the seedlings on the grid which is difficult for the workers who do not normally follow proper spacing in planting and maintain seedling population per hill. To overcome such difficulties, a suitable transplanter should be developed for SRI method of cultivation. There are several self-propelled rice transplanters available commercially, which will reduce labour requirement drastically thereby reducing the cost of cultivation.

System of rice intensification a new method is found to be an efficient alternative to increase the rice production as it require less water, less seed, reducing cost of cultivation and saving labour as compared to transplanted rice. SRI appears to be a harbinger of post-modern agriculture, a new set of technologies and practices that are based on biological evolution to the problem raising agricultural productivity, superseding the engineering, chemical and genetic solution of 20th century.

Soil Test Crop Response studies involving Integrated Plant Nutrition System (STCR - IPNS) were conducted on a Typic Haplustalf of Tamil Nadu, Southern India for developing fertiliser prescriptions for desired yield targets of rice- rice sequence under System of Rice Intensification (SRI). By adopting the Inductive cum Targeted yield model, variations in soil fertility with reference to soil available nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were established and test crop experiment was conducted with rice-rice sequence. The findings pertaining to rabi season is discussed in this paper.
