Rice and system productivity

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the staple food and being the most important ingredient of the food basket for most nations in Asia. The declining productivity of rice and its availability of per capita is therefore a policy concern. Nevertheless, the production of rice in Malaysia is primarily implemented by adopting the conventional technique. This technique has increased the production cost of rice and became a constraint to achieving the production potential for the farmer.

Ebook "Community seed production sustainability in rice–wheat farming" analyzes the sustainability of community seed production under a rice–wheat farming system from microeconomic perspectives, considering how seed producers benefit from community seed production and how those benefits continue into the future. Seed producers’ performance in resource management, governance and marketing strategies indicates current benefits, whereas soil conservation and risk-management practices provide the basis for future benefits.

Conventional crop establishment methods such as puddled transplanting in rice-wheat system in the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) require a large amount of water and labor, both of which are increasingly becoming scarce and expensive. Efforts have been made to evaluate alternate crops establishment methods, which are more efficient in. A field experiment was conducted for two years to evaluate various crop planting methods in ricewheat system for their efficiency in labor, water and energy use and economic profitability.

Rice-wheat (Oryza sativa L.-Triticum aestivum L.) rotation is the major production system in Asia, covering about 18 million ha. Continuous and conventional RWC system practice has witnessed a significant slowdown in the yield growth rate. The sustainability of this important cropping system is at risk due to second-generation problems (low fertility status, multiple nutrient deficiencies, and imbalanced use of fertilizers, ground water depletion at faster rate, soil salinization, and inadequate system diversity).
