Rice industry in India

Rice is an important component of agri-value chain, and a life-line for the livelihood of billion rural Indians. India’s rice sector has been transformed significantly with the increase of rice production by 250% and yield by 230% between 1971 and 2015.

The Jammu and Kashmir has a varied type of climate from sub-tropical to cold arid. The main crops grown in the state are rice, maize, wheat, pulses, oil seeds, saffron etc. The cultivation of Saffron is mostly confined to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In Kashmir saffron cultivation is peculiar and the legend about its introduction in to Kashmir shows that it is an ancient industry about 2200 years’ old. It is the legendry crop of the welldrained plateau of Pampore. The present study is an attempt to analyse the cost, return and marketing of Saffron in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jaggery is the sugarcane based traditional Indian sweetener. Jaggery is among major agro processing industries in India. At present, 61.4 MT of jaggery is being produced from total sugarcane produced in the country, which is known as most nutritious agent among all sweeteners. Value addition to solid jaggery by inclusion of nutritive substances through puffed rice, gram, sesame and various kinds of nuts (cashew, almond), vitamins, iron, and taste enhancers like chocolate powder will increase demand for this kind of jaggery.

Effluent borne heavy metals in soil ecosystem can result into phytotoxic levels impair plant growth. Long-term accumulation of toxic metals in soils and their uptake by crop plants has a high potential for phytotoxicity besides entering into the food chain. Soils in both the districts were slightly acidic to neutral. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was highest in maize wheat production system and least in pasture system in soils of district Samba, and whereas least was observed in rice wheat system in soils of Kathua.

Edible wax coating is one of the method for enhancing the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, thereby post-harvest losses of these can also be reduced. India ranks first in the production of rice bran oil and large amount of wax available from the oil refineries. At present Indian scenario this wax is more used in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries even though it is edible. Lack of proper refining method constraints its use in food application.
