Rice sheath blight disease
-
Sheath blight (SB), caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is a common rice disease worldwide. Currently, rice cultivars with robust resistance to R. solani are still lacking. To provide theoretic basis for molecular breeding of R. solani-resistant rice cultivars, the changes of transcriptome profiles in response to R. solani infection were compared between a moderate resistant cultivar (Yanhui-888, YH) and a susceptible cultivar (Jingang-30, JG).

The study was conducted in Palamu district of Jharkhand to know the socioeconomic status of farmers. They were categorized in three groups i.e. small ,medium and large farmers which were differ from each other with regard to socio –economic factors and found that 54 per cent rice growers has medium level of knowledge .

The present study focused on the effect of various seaweeds extracts and biocontrol agents on controlling sheath blight in rice caused by R.solani under in vitro condition. Use of biocontrol agents and sea weed extracts is an eco friendly, cost effective and sustainable alternative method in disease management.

A survey was conducted on Swarna cultivar (MTU 7029) of rice during Kharif 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 at Nadia district of West Bengal to record the fungal disease and their respective yield loss. Ten diseases (Leaf blast, Sheath blight, Sheath rot, Brown spot, Brown Leaf Spots caused by Curvularia lunata, Stackburn disease, Leaf spot caused by Nigrospora oryzae, Stem rot, Rotting by Choanephora cucurbitarum and False smut) were based on visual observation on Swarna rice cultivar and yield loss due to respective disease was calculated by measuring test weight (gm) of rice grains.

Rice sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the major diseases of rice. The pathogen infects rice plants directly through stomata or using lobate appressoria and hyphal masses called infection cushions. Initially the mycelium looked thread like structure, milky white in colour than mycelium converted mature Sclerotia.

Sheath blight of rice caused by Rhizoctonia solani is one of the major biotic constraints in India and reduce rice yield ranging from 20-50% depending on the severity of the disease and stages of infection. The disease has spread widely in terms of both occurrence and intensity over past 20 years.

Rice sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is one of the most devastating diseases for stable rice production in most rice-growing regions of the world. Currently, studies of the molecular mechanism of rice sheath blight resistance are scarce. Here, we used mutated rice population of the variety swarna induced by the sodium azide (NaN3). The variability in disease reaction was observed among mutated rice lines. Out of the total 1000 mutant plants, 47 plants were screened that show low disease index, ranged between 0 to 5 were selected for next generation.

The present study was conducted at the experimental farm of ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, India in Kharif season 2016 with an objective to identify sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight disease resistance rice genotypes under submergence condition in middle Indo Gangetic Plain. The disease incidence was observed at maturity stages during Kharif season 2016. The incidence of sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight of paddy ranged from 18.6 to 39.0% and 15.3 to 34.0%, respectively.

Present study was undertaken to evolve an efficient and reliable measure for management of sheath blight of rice through application of judicious doses of plant nutrients. In this investigation, the effect of different doses i.e. control dose (naturally available in soil), deficient dose, recommended dose and excess dose of macronutrients (N, P &K) & micronutrients (S, Zn & Fe) were assessed on incubation period for first appearance of sheath blight, disease severity and on phenolic contents in inoculated rice plants.

Rice is an important staple food for more than half of the world’s population and is subject to diseases that often place major biological constraints on production. Sheath blight of rice is caused by a soil borne fungus and biological control of the disease is an efficient substitute to replace chemical methods. In the present study thirty native fluorescent Pseudomonads, an efficient biocontrol agent have been isolated and confirmed by cultural, morphological, biochemical characterization and visualization under UV light.

Investigations were made to determine the status of major targeted diseases of rice in different locations grown in agro climatic conditions of Jabalpur. With a view to determine the status of diseases in rice crop, survey was made in kymore plateau and satpura zone of Madhya Pradesh. Six different locations around Jabalpur (Panagar, Maharajpur, Patan road, Damoh road, Tilwara, Bhedaghat) and Seed production units at COA, Jabalpur were surveyed through random plot and fixed field survey method.

Maize is the 3rd most important crop in the Bihar next to rice and wheat. It is grown throughout the year in one or other part of state. Due to continuous cropping of maize and other factors like improper use of fertilizers, pesticides and climate change, the disease problem has increased in tremendous proportion. Almost all parts of the maize plant are susceptible to numerous diseases that considerably reduce the yield and quality of the crop.

A survey was conducted during Kharif 2016-2017 to assess the incidence of sheath blight disease in nine districts of Telangana state. The per cent disease incidence (PDI) ranged from 20 to 80 per cent. Maximum PDI (80) was recorded at Miryalaguda block, while minimum (20) was observed at Buddipally, Rudrur, Vangapally and Wyra villages. The maximum severity (9scale) was observed at Huzurnagar and Miryalaguda blocks. The disease was observed from panicle initiation to grain hardening stage.
