  • In recent years, rice straw open burning (RSOB) activity has commonly occurred after the harvest in the countryside of Hanoi. This activity has caused negative impacts on air quality, especially it emits a large amount of black carbon (BC), a short lived climate pollutant (SLCP). As the other SLCPs , BC directly affects human health and ecosystem. This paper presents the results of measured BC concentrations in RSOB season in Lai Yen commune, Hoai Duc district in Hanoi.

  • Biochar was prepared from rice straw using hydrothermal carbonization method which consisted of zinc chloride treatment. The effects of hydrothermal temperature, time and biomass/water rate on methylene blue removal from aqueous solution were investigated. Besides, response surface modeling (RSM) and the central composite design – face centered (CCF) method will be used in designing experiments.

  • Acetic acid or formic acid treatment of rice straw with the variation of reaction variables, namely acid concentration, catalyst (HCl or H2SO4) concentration, reaction time, temperature and liquor ratio, was investigated to ascertain effects on the dissolution of hemicellulose, which facilitates the dissolution of lignin during alkaline extraction or peroxyacid treatment and improved the drainability of straw pulp.

  • Rice straw open burning is the most common form of agricultural by-product treatment in developing countries. Contaminated pollutants pollute the environment, badly affect human’s health and contribute to the increase of greenhouse gases that impact climate change. This research was carried out to estimate the amount of rice straw produced, a seasonal burning rate and the modified combustion efficiency (MCE) from field-based rice straw open burning by field sampling method, field survey and quick measurement, the inventory is based on emission factors.

By case-study investigation and energy analysis, the report put out detail information on biomass energy of rice straw, rice husk, com straw, corn core, peanut straw and total biomass energy from agricultural wastes in Nam Dinh province. According to investigation data, yearly the total agricultural wastes in Nam Dinh province is more than 1l million tons.

  • In this study, a carbon–based solid acid catalyst was prepared via hydrothermal carbonization method (HTC) using glucose and pyrolysed waste tyre as carbon precursors and aqueous solution of H2SO4 as sulfonation agent. Prepared catalysts were characterized by X–ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared FT–IR and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). As the result, catalysts were manufactured with the appropriate physical and chemical characteristics and high acidity.

  • This fungus could grow well on rice straw under solid state fermentation. Pretreatment of rice straw using L. lactinea CP9 was based on the activity of fungal lignin peroxidase and laccase. After 20 days, the residual enzyme activity was of 21.6 and 18.4 nkat/g material for lignin peroxidase and laccase, respectively. Pretreatment significantly improved the quality of straw, as lignin loss of 38% while cellulosic fibers were comparatively well preserved.

  • In this study, Trichoderma harzianum EGE-K38 was used for micropropagule production in solid-state fermentation. Various inexpensive agricultural co-products including wheat bran, sawdust, rice straw, hazelnut shell, grape marc, and cotton seed cake were tested as natural substrates, and zeolite was tested as an inert support for micropropagule production.

  • This study was undertaken to find ways of reducing the time taken by goats to begin to eat an edible feed that they have not previously encountered. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the time taken for goats (7-8 months old) to ingest an unfamiliar feed (rice straw) was shorter (4 days) when it was first offered to them in the presence of familiar positive cues (the odor or flavor of juices extracted from previously eaten, nutritionally beneficial grasses), than if it was offered in the absence of such cues (10 days).
