  • The growth of plant is reaction between interplay of roots and shoots with the environment. Planting media i.e. soil supply support to plants and growth to microorganisms. The interactions between roots and microbes is beneficial and if enhanced then results in increased plant growth and yield. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria are certain aggressive root colonizing bacteria that benefits plants.

  • Mycorrhizal fungi occur in most of the soils and colonize roots of many plant species. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to study the efficiency of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi indigenous to Arunachal Pradesh in uptaking plant nutrients for the Piper mullesua plantlets at different soil condition i.e., sterilized soil, unsterilized soil and field condition. As the sterilized soil condition is difficult to understand the performance of AM fungi, field experiments are necessary to understand the effect of mycorrhizal fungi on yield of crops in field condition.

Present investigation has been taken up to characterize the isolated AM fungal species from rhizosphere soils of different host crops grown across various Zones of Andhra Pradesh. A total of twelve AM fungal spores were characterized based on their morphological traits.

  • Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are a wide range of root colonizing bacteria with the capacity to enhance plant growth by increasing seed emergence, producing lytic enzyme and bacteriocin. Soil or seed application of PGPR have been used to enhance growth of the several crops as well as to suppress the growth of the plant pathogens. The pot experiment was conducted during winter season to find out the effect of three plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) either singly or in combination on vegetative growth parameters of coriander seedling.

  • The rhizosphere of Momordica charantia (Bitter gourd) has a significant effect on the aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria and actinomycetes population compared to the respective barren soil. Rhizospheric soils (0–25 cm depth) along the roots were processed at surface (0-1 cm) and also at 5 cm interval in the spring season. Bacterial population significantly differed in each transect with a maximum at 1–5 cm depth, and decreased with the increase in the root length. Rhizosheric region (20–25 cm) exhibited maximum R/S ratio (rhizospheric effect).

  • Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are beneficial bacteria that colonize plant roots and enhance plant growth by a wide variety of mechanisms. The isolate of PGPR designated as Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain (2CpS1) was successfully isolated from the soil and rhizosphere of roots of plants growing in fields, Almora district.

  • Crop improvement is significantly enhanced by the application of beneficial microbes. Progress in understanding the biology of mycorrhizal fungi is hampered by the limited number of species that can be successfully propagated and studied in vitro using resting spores. VAM spores were isolated from the rhizosphere soil and were cultivated in-vitro using Cooke Rose Bengal medium. In pot culture experiment, the plants treated with VAM isolates exhibited enhancement in growth than the control ones. After using mycorrhizal inoculum, the root colonization of crop plants was greatly affected.

  • Endophytes are microorganisms mostly bacteria and fungi that lives partially or completely its life cycle inside living plant tissue without causing adverse negative symptoms. Endophytes play a major role in structuring shaping processes of plant such as colonization, competition, coexistence and soil nutrient dynamics. Some endophytes promote growth of their host plants by enhancing the host‟s ability to take up nitrogen and phosphorus.

  • Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) from the small phylum Glomeromycota forms symbiotic association with the roots of higher plants. The AMF appears to benefit by improving the uptake of phosphate and other nutrients from soil and also increases the disease tolerance to the host plant. Mycorrhizal plants produce certain substances that have been indicated as copartners in resistance to the attack of root pathogens.

  • Phosphorus and zinc are two essential nutrients which are required for normal plant growth. These nutrients are mutually antagonistic in certain circumstances which can cause yield reductions in many crops due to either P or Zn deficiencies. Deficiencies typically happen when a nutrient is available in small amounts. In this phenomenon, the nutrient is present in marginal to normal levels but the antagonizing nutrient is available in such a large amount that it induces the deficiency of the other.

  • Use of biocontrol agent to increase the growth of crop has been an alternative source to meet the demand of growing population. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are the soil bacteria inhabiting around/on the root surface and are directly or indirectly involved in promoting plant growth and development via production and secretion of various regulatory chemicals in the locality of rhizosphere. These bacteria competitively colonize the roots of plants and can act as biofertilizers and/or antagonist (biopesticides) or simultaneously both.

Percent colonization, spore density and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with the rhizospheric soil and roots of pippali growing wild as well as under cultivated conditions were investigated. It was found that 100% of the surveyed sample was of mycorrhizal infestation. The spore colonization per cent of AMF ranged from 30.80 to 66.50% spores per 100 g of soil. The maximum spore population (185.

The endophytes selected were Diaporthe phaseolorum (WAA02), Trichoderma asperellum (T2), and Penicillium citrinum (BTF08). Ramets were first inoculated with 100 mL of fungal cells (106 cfu mL 1 ) via soil drenching. For the next 7 days, ramets were sampled and subjected to three different assays to detect and identify fungal colonization, and establish their proliferation potential in planta.

  • What are Trichoderma? Trichoderma spp. are fungi that are present in nearly all soils and other diverse habitats. In soil, they frequently are the most prevalent culturable fungi. They are favored by the presence of high levels of plant roots, which they colonize readily. Some strains are highly rhizosphere competent, i.e., able to colonize and grow on roots as they develop.
