Rudder and propeller

In this research, hydrodynamic performance of a cargo ship system rudder – propeller in full scale, with a different distance gap between rudder and propeller was computed by using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code. Firstly, the original system rudder – propeller of a 5500 ton cargo ship in full scale was simulated the hydrodynamic performance and validated CFD results.

The authors built a research model and a mathematical one by basing on the BEM method and simulating them by the Fluent-Ansys software. Then, results of simulated calculation of the current effect on controlling ship course in the Haiphong fairway are presented in order to improve the safety of navigation in this channel.

In this work, the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), ANSYS-Fluent V.14.5 has been used to illustrate the effects of rudder and blade pitch on hydrodynamic performances of a propeller. At first, the characteristic curves of a container ship propeller are computed. Then, effects of rudder on hydrodynamic performances of the propeller in the both cases of the propeller with and without rudder have been investigated.
